Volunteers of America National Services Selected as Developer for New Family Affordable Housing Site at Historic Langston and Slater Schools In Washington, DC. For 125 years, Volunteers of America has worked on the frontlines of service to help countless people in need. During 2021, for our milestone anniversary, we will share the faces and stories of the varied people who have benefited from this work, as well as the many VOA workers who have dedicated themselves to service to others. The name Volunteers of America was selected when the organization was founded almost 125 years ago. It signified that the organization was comprised of people voluntarily choosing to help others. In those days, a volunteer was anyone who was committed to a mission or cause. Since its earliest days, when Volunteers of America brought food, medicine and comfort to people not served by other charities, volunteering has been instrumental in every aspect of the organization's ministry of service.
