Click here for more shipping information. This is a beautiful plant. I have had a bit of difficulty growing it from seed by direct sowing. I only got one plant out of six seeds sown last year. It could be my error or poor soil. I am very pleased with the plant I did get. It is pushing five feet tall with a few beautiful bright purple/pink blooms and many more to come. I saw my first butterfly on it. Hope to get more plants to grow.
All the members of the Echinacea genus are native to North America, though they are becoming more rare in the wild. The genus name Echinacea comes from the Greek word for "hedgehog," referring to the spiny seed head of the flower. Historically, this family of plants has been extensively used by Native American tribes and early settlers because of its beneficial medicinal properties. Echinacea acts as a natural antibiotic, and improves the function of the immune system; it became very popular in the medical field in the early twentieth century, particularly after the extensive researches of the German Dr. Gerhard Madaus. Echinacea purpurea seed is still widely planted as an herbal remedy, as well as being a common and well-loved addition to perennial gardens and prairie plantings.
Purple Coneflower will attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, ladybugs & hummingbirds. These beautiful, heirloom flowers have been used in flower gardens & borders for decades. The plants themselves will grow to a mature height of around 24 to 36 inches tall, producing spiny, cone like centers, surrounded by gorgeous pale purple petals. Grown as a perennial flowering plant, the Purple Coneflower will establish a deep root system in the first year of growth. After the temperature drops with the first frost, the plant life above will wilt, leaving it's roots to remain alive and dormant until the following growing season, when it will emerge again. All Coneflower seeds sold by Seed Needs are Non-GMO based seed products and are intended for the current & the following growing season. All seeds are produced from open pollinated plants, stored in a temperature controlled facility and constantly moved out due to popularity. (Source: www.amazon.com)
