Flowers are beautiful and make any garden more colourful. The beautiful are the favourites for many beginners. But some people like their garden grassy, because it gives them oxygen and health. If magnolia flowers are lush, emotional symphonies, then grass flowers are elegant, crystalline Bach fugues. Grass flowers are among Nature's most understated, exquisitely designed expressions. With the Grass Family, the Poaceae, embracing about 700 genera and 11,000 species, each grass flower we meet is a fugue-like variation on a grass-flower theme. At the right, Annual Bluegrass, Poa annua, occurs in lawns and other habitats throughout most of North America and much of the rest of the world. With roots, leaf blades, and stems topped with an inflorescence of flowers, it's a typical grass. We might think of Annual Bluegrass as our "Standard Grass," and whenever we meet another species, consider how that species differs from our bluegrass. Those differences will be what's special about those other species.

Grass

The success of the grasses lies in part in their morphology and growth processes and in part in their physiological diversity. There are both C3 and C4 grasses, referring to the photosynthetic pathway for carbon fixation. The C4 grasses have a photosynthetic pathway, linked to specialized Kranz leaf anatomy, which allows for increased water use efficiency, rendering them better adapted to hot, arid environments.Although the C4 species are all in the PACMAD clade (see diagram above), it seems that various forms of C4 have arisen some twenty or more times, in various subfamilies or genera. In the Aristida genus for example, one species (A. longifolia) is C3 but the approximately 300 other species are C4. As another example, the whole tribe of Andropogoneae, which includes maize, sorghum, sugar cane, "Job's tears", and bluestem grasses, is C4.Pink Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana) - You can enjoy fresh green foliage topped by long, thick dusty-pink plumes when you grow Pampas Grass seeds.

These elegant ornamental grasses have "feather duster" plumes from late summer and throughout the fall! The plumes are often cut and dried for indoor use, or they can be left on the plant for wonderful winter interest.A fertilizer such as Flagship 24-0-6 is a great choice for when your grass is flowering. It is rich in nitrogen (24%) and also contains some Potassium (6%), but the middle number Phosphorus is 0%. Phosphorus is most responsible in seed development and flowering which we are trying to prevent, so having that zeroed out during this time is a good thing.Of course, that awesome plan won’t work at all. You see, almost all grass seed you get these days is a hybrid. In other words it’s been genetically modified and the seed that the genetically modified grass produces is not viable. This seed is either sterile or will produce grass that is very different (and less strong and attractive) than the grass the seed came from. (Source:plantforsuccess.com)
