STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: To help your future employers find and understand your skills, talents and career passions with my own personal story for every career and life path I have walked. I have been the COO of a Fortune 500 company named L’Oreal and spent 11 years in the digital marketing industry, including 6 years as the Chief Marketing Officer. I have been the co-founder of 4 companies, including the Peanut Shell Group.



According to Sinek, there are two ways to attract customers: inspiring the carrots or manipulating the sticks. Most of the sales tactics used by businesses today involve manipulation. These include price, promotions, fear, aspirations, peer pressure, and novelty. Pricing and promotions are the most commonly identified forms of sales manipulation, but fear, aspirations, peer pressure, and novelty tend to be more discrete.

Entrepreneur Simon Sinek “hit rock bottom” in late 2005. He had started his own consulting business in 2002, but three years later, he ran out of passion. Dead-ended, Sinek thought about what made him happy. He wondered why some leaders and companies succeeded and others do not. He realized that inspirational leaders identify a purpose and follow it. The actions they take and what they make is secondary to achieving their mission. Sinek calls this leadership process the “Golden Circle”: It starts with a vision (the “Why”), then moves to implementation (the “How”), and then conquers the product or service (the “What”). Unfortunately, many leaders have this pattern backward. They first focus on what they do and how; then they try to differentiate their product based on price, quality or features. We’d like to say that 100 percent of the prospects will immediately do this but in reality, some need additional nudges which is why we write a sequence of letters (depending on the client could be 2 or 4). Gaining a seat around this table means you are committed to growing not only your business but also yourself. We’re not looking for the biggest businesses or even the most profitable ones, but the businesses led by someone who has the entrepreneurial spirit, one who is a leader who’s determination and desire to grow and share that experience with their new friends, a leader who is not afraid to make decisions.

After initially focusing too broadly across general management positions, sales leadership roles and strategic operations jobs tailored to both enterprise and SMB customers within a range of industries, I eventually gained clarity through my purpose. Once you've incorporated all of those tips, share your CV with someone who knows nothing about your experience and ask them to describe back to you why any employer would want to call you for an interview. That's the only purpose for your CV by the way. If they can't easily call out what makes you so great, rip it up again and start all over one more time.

Don't start your job search by looking on LinkedIn, talking to recruiting agencies or even writing your CV. Start with your overall purpose and the value you provide. You’ve probably heard that before you start a business, market research is key. You do your market research, know your customer and then build your niche. Sinek, however, disagrees. According to Sinek, the “Why” does not come from looking ahead at what you want to achieve and then figuring out an appropriate strategy to get there. It is not born out of market research or for that matter even extensive interviews with customers or employees. It comes from looking in the completely opposite direction from where you are right now. Finding the “Why” is a process of discovery, not invention.

Author and speaker Simon Sinek wrote in his book, STAR WITH WHY, that great leaders inspire great things because they start with why they do what they do, instead of just focusing on what they do. You can apply this kind of thinking to your job search. Getting a job, getting the ideal job, requires hard work, drive, passion, and creativity. So it’s important to start with your WHY. Great companies do not hire skilled people and motivate them; they hire already motivated people and inspire them. Companies with a strong sense of “Why” are able to inspire their employees. Such employees are more productive and innovative, and the feeling they bring to work attracts other people eager to work there as well.

For all organisations that go through the split, they are no longer inspired by a cause greater than themselves. They simply come to work, manage systems and work to reach certain preset goals. Walmart began with the intention, the why, to help and serve people. They did this using a discounting method of selling goods. However, along the way, they lost sense of their why and forgot their purpose. They stopped caring about their employees. Don't send your CV to a list of companies that you would love to work for with a cover letter explaining why you perfectly fit their values. If you haven't bothered to check out their open roles on their career page why should they bother reading a random unsolicited application? I honestly don't think I've ever read a cover letter as an interviewer anyway.

Take the example of Harley Davidson: Harley Davidson embodies the values and lifestyle of the people wearing it. The symbol is no longer about Harley Davidson. Instead, the logo embodies an entire value set—their own. The symbol is no longer about Harley, it’s about the people who love Harley Davidsons for what they are. (Source: www.freshworks.com)
