Refund a Game on Steam

I'm usually a pretty patient guy, but I lost my temper and refused to let up, so Steam Support had to refund me. Here's how to do it. Hint: refusing to accept a refund gives Steam Support a lot of power. Suspect something's wrong. If you have a problem with a game, submit a support request. Standard first contact. Now, with the help.

Day

DLC purchased from the Steam store is refundable within fourteen days of purchase, and if the underlying title has been played for less than two hours since the DLC was purchased, so long as the DLC has not been consumed, modified or transferred. Please note that in some cases, Steam will be unable to give refunds for some third party DLC (for example, if the DLC irreversibly levels up a game character). These exceptions will be clearly marked as nonrefundable on the Store page prior to purchase.

Within the applicable time frame identified in the Hardware Refund Policy, you may request a refund for Steam hardware and accessories purchased via Steam for any reason. You must ship the hardware back to us within fourteen (14) days after requesting the refund, following the instructions we provide you. Please see the Hardware Refund Policy for detailed guidelines on the return and cancellation process for Steam hardware and accessories. (Source: store.steampowered.com)

Ask

It doesn’t matter. Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within the required return period, and, in the case of games, if the title has been played for less than two hours. There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway, and we’ll take a look.”

Valve rocked the PC gaming world when it announced a new refund feature for Steam a few years ago. While some use it as a way to demo expensive titles, most Steam users request refunds on games that are too technically demanding for their system. Applying for a refund is a simple process, as long as you’ve followed all of the rules. Here’s how to request refunds on Steam games and DLC, no questions asked. (Source: win.gg)

Want

However, I don’t want to be cynical here; it’s too easy to blame players. And consider that when Steam introduced Steam Direct, it opened the floodgates to a whole host of games of questionable quality on the platform. So, if we assume that players are always honest, then all the refunds will be justified. They'll be for broken games, hardware issues, accidental purchases (more common than it seems), for example. We can also see some positive side effects, in that players will be more willing to try new products. They could end up trying out genres with which they haven't dabbled, or even experimental games. Whatever the reason, a refund still needs to be issued within that two-hour timeframe. For AAA games, this appears to be a good deal. You can play an hour of a massive expansive open-world RPG or similar and see if it appeals to you. Some of those games can last more than 100 hours, so a player can play an hour and experience 1% of the game. That way, they can make an informed decision about whether they want to commit to it. And if they still haven't come to a decision an hour into the game, they have another of hour of play left. (Source: www.techradar.com)
