Do you remember any of the athletes that brought home gold in the Olympics? What about gymnastics all-arounders? Did you know that many of these athletes were also darlings on Broadway before they emerged on the Olympics stage? This report, commissioned by BG&E, highlights all the similarities between the stars who made it big on the red carpet and the stars that left their marks on the Olympic stage.

Mrs. Potter was active in the Welcome to Washington International Club that promotes “understanding through friendship and friendship through understanding” to area arrivals. She served as a gymnastics judge in metropolitan area gymnastic meets. She participated in the Stephen Ministries at Fourth Presbyterian Church of Bethesda, MD, a program in which trained lay counselors walk with individuals or families through crises or challenging seasons. Mrs. Potter’s love of music was expressed in her long membership in the church choir.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, the Coldwater High School Gymnastics team is hosting the 12th annual “Stick It for a Cure” benefit invitational to raise awareness and funding to support cancer patients and survivors in Branch County. All proceeds from the event will benefit ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital’s (PCRH) Cancer Center. The competition will welcome teams from all over Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Biles' appearance at the iconic awards show on Sunday wasn't her first trip to the VMAs. In 2016, she attended the annual event with "The Final Five" members of the Olympic gymnastics team, hitting the red carpet with fellow champions Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez.

The Olympic gymnast, 24, appeared on the red carpet at Sunday's event dressed in a pastel pink gown with one shoulder strap and a thigh-high slit on the side. Her recent VMAs red carpet moment marks Biles' first major event since the Tokyo Summer Olympics, during which she won a silver medal for women's artistic gymnastics team all-around and a bronze medal for women's balance beam. Biles withdrew from four event finals while competing in Japan after suffering from a case of the "twisties," a physical condition that could endanger her while competing.

The Stella Ledbetter Rising Stars Scholarship was created by community members to remember a beautiful little girl who was an inspiration to the entire community. In the words of her parents, Jesse and Mindy Ledbetter, “Stella was an inspiration to us all. We see her every day in the stillness of the clouds and the rustling chimes. We feel her spirit in the air as it whispers through the trees and in the beauty that surrounds us. Stella was a gift to us all and she is continuing this gift through the Stella Ledbetter Rising Stars Scholarship”.

After high school, Spurgeon chose to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. In 1967, he was responsible for the rescue of six Marines who were trapped behind enemy lines. He was mortally wounded by hostile military action on the battle field. By protecting his fellow soldiers, he became the first Davie County native to lose his life in the Vietnam War. Goss was awarded the Bronze Star with a Combat “V” posthumously for his heroic actions on that day, and he was awarded a special place in the heart of every person in Davie County. Bobby had a good “navigation system” in life and in business too. He was an ethical, trustworthy, family man. Bobby moved to Mocksville to serve as the State Farm agent where he remained for 33 years. His partner Bernice was always with him, and they worked together while raising their family. Bobby shared his many talents with his community and church, where he faithfully served. He was elected and served the people of Davie County well for 3 terms as County Commissioner.

In 1925, the Julius Rosenwald Foundation provided the impetus and shared the funding for the construction of the “Colored School” on Campbell Road in Mocksville. Rosenwald School, the first name of the school, began with grades 1-8. By 1934, it had expanded to grade 11, and school year 1946-47 the 12 (Source: www.daviefoundation.org).
