Calico Beardtongue

The Calico Beardtongue plant has the same form as the more common Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) but it has pink flowers and can tolerate more shade. Calico Beardtongue prefers rich loamy soils, and moist to mesic conditions. Calico Beardtongue can be found in open rocky woodlands, oak savannas, black soil prairies, and moist meadows. June 30 Do calico beardtongue tend to require staking? I am considering planting them near my foxglove beardtongue plants, which do require staking once they get to their full height. If so, do you have stakes/supports that you recommend? Thank you!Good evening! Upon searching for some identification of a flowering plant in my front yard plantings near the house. It appears to be the "Penstemon calycosus (Calico Beardtongue)". I have photos of my specimen that could help verify what I have.A Prairie Moon • June 30 Hi Sarah. Yes, in a landscape setting, I can see how the Foxglove and the Calico Beardtongue could flop over. Have you tried planting understory plants to support them? If you have enough sun, Prairie Dropseed or Little Bluestem would be nice choices. Otherwise, we think Peony cages work well to support mid-size plants like the Penstemon.
