In 1903, Big 5 was founded by Mr. Guido DeGreve and grew to that scale on the back of his instincts and his leadership abilities.

Outfitting sports enthusiasts since 1955, BIG 5 Sporting Goods is one of America's top retailers of name brand sporting goods and accessories. Operating over 430 stores in 11 western states, BIG 5 offers exceptional value on a broad selection of athletic shoes, seasonal sports apparel and accessories for the entire family including athletic equipment for team sports, fitness, camping, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, winter and summer recreation and roller sports. The duties are always plentiful and varied so you never get bored. A great place to learn retail management with opportunities for advancement. Store culture depends on the management, but corporate culture is not great. The business is run for the bottom line and investor returns. The strategic planning they employ involves cutting costs as much as possible and is often at the cost of the frontline employees. The employees are not valued by corporate and they demonstrate that through their low wages, company policies such as short breaks, and micromanagement. The CEO is out of touch with the employees and very slow to incorporate positive changes in technology. Great employees tend to stay long enough to learn new skills, then move on to better companies to work for, so turnover is constant and high. (Source: www.indeed.com)
