What is a font

A font is a graphical representation of text that may include a different typeface, point size, weight, color, or design. The image shows examples of different computer fonts. Software programs like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and WordPad allow users to change the font when typing text in the document or spreadsheet, as do web designers. While some users refer to fonts and typefaces interchangeably, it's more accurate to think of a typeface as a group of cohesive letterforms. A font is the way the typeface is presented, taking into consideration the size and style. A group of fonts including bold and italic variations is known as a font family.

Font

A font is a set of printable or displayable text character s in a specific style and size. The type design for a set of fonts is the typeface and variations of this design form the typeface family . Thus, Helvetica is a typeface family, Helvetica italic is a typeface, and Helvetica italic 10-point is a font. In practice, font and typeface are often used without much precision, sometimes interchangably. An outline font is a software typeface that can generate a scalable range of font sizes. A bitmap font is a digital represention of a font that is already fixed in size or a limited set of sizes. The two most popular outline font software programs on today's computers are TrueType and Adobe's Type 1. TrueType fonts come with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. However, Type 1 is a standard outline font (ISO 9541). Both TrueType and Type 1 fonts can be used by Adobe's PostScript printers (although Adobe says that Type 1 fonts makes fuller use of the PostScript language).

Outline and stroke fonts can be resized in a single font by substituting different measurements for components of each glyph, but they are more complicated to render on screen or in print than bitmap fonts because they require additional computer code to render the bitmaps to display on screen and in print. Although all font types are still in use, most fonts used on computers today are outline fonts.Fonts can be monospaced (i.e. every character is plotted a constant distance from the previous character that it is next to, while drawing) or proportional (each character has its own width). However, the particular font-handling application can affect the spacing, particularly when justifying text. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)
