The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (16-8) and Florida State Seminoles (16-5) are set to meet for the third time this season and, this time, the stakes are higher. The teams are set to meet in the 2021 ACC Tournament championship game in Greensboro. N.C., on Saturday evening, with conference glory and a guaranteed trip to the 2021 NCAA Tournament in the balance. FSU won the first meeting against Georgia Tech in December, and the Seminoles knocked off North Carolina on Friday to reach this point. Georgia Tech won the rematch against Florida State, with the Yellow Jackets beating Miami in their first ACC Tournament game before advancing when Virginia withdrew on Friday. Georgia Tech comes into this matchup after losing two in a row, the first time they’ve had back-to-back losses since the first two games of the season. The Yellow Jackets are averaging 77 points per game. They’re led by two prolific scorers, Jose Alvarado and Moses Wright, who average 18 and 17 points per game, respectively. They also have two other players averaging low double figures each game. The issue GT has is on defense, they’re giving up over 72 points per contest and KenPom currently has them ranked as the 86th best defense in the nation, which ranks in the bottom half of the ACC.

The skinny: The Seminoles play a road game for the first time in 12 days, but at a venue where they’ve had much success in recent years. FSU has won the last five true road games against the Yellow Jackets, and haven’t lost in Atlanta since 2007. … The ‘Noles hold a 39-38 advantage over the Jackets in the rivalry and had a 10-game winning streak until Tech won in Tallahassee last year, 86-80. … The ‘Noles enter the game having matched their second-highest AP ranking in history. FSU was sixth in 1993 and was second for two weeks in 1972. … The Seminoles won against a ranked ACC team for the fifth time in six games, 73-68 on Saturday against Louisville. … Georgia Tech lost to Virginia 62-49 in its last game. The Cavaliers held Tech’s frontcourt starters, center Ben Lammers and forward Quinton Stephens, to a combined 5 of 18 shooting night. Stephens did collect 13 rebounds and Lammers seven. … A victory would match FSU’s best 21-game start in history. The Seminoles were 19-2 to start the 1988-89 season.
