Sweetest day 2020.
You might have heard that Saturday Oct. 16 is Sweetest Day. But what is this syrupy-sweet holiday for guys and who celebrates it? If you’re wondering what the heck kind of holiday Sweetest Day is supposed to be, well, we are too — so never fear, we have the lowdown on the holiday. Sweetest Day is now a primarily a holiday for the men. The idea is for women to give their boyfriends and husbands small gifts to commemorate their love. Commonly “suggested” gifts for Sweetest Day include, of course, candy! Sweetest Day is an original American holiday not based on any group’s religious tradition. It’s simply a reminder that a thoughtful word, deed or small gift enriches the life of the recipient as well as the person giving it.
Legend has it that Sweetest Day was established around 1922 by Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio candy company employee who wanted to bring happiness to the lives of those who often were forgotten. Kingston and others distributed candy and small gifts to orphans, people confined to their homes and others to show them that someone cared. Like Valentine's Day, you can give loved ones in your life chocolates, candies or cards but the holiday has an added emphasis to helping other in need, either with material gifts or through moral support.
Sweetest Day is now almost synonymous with Valentine’s Day. Folks give flowers, small gifts, love trinkets and, of course, candy to those they care about most. But Sweetest Day, also has that added emphasis on helping those in need with material gifts as well as giving moral support to those who may not have the easiest lives. Every little bit helps and it’s something to remember on one of our Sweetest Days. (Source: nationaltoday.com)
On National Sweetest Day, take care of all those who need extra attention. Even those who need significant care, when given the smallest token, will feel the effects. A little treat, a card, a show of support during a time of need may be the sweetest gift on this day. (Source: nationaldaycalendar.com)
At root, though, National Sweetest Day isn’t just about consuming as many chocolates as you can. Instead, it is about love. The original developers of the concept took it upon themselves to distribute candy to the neediest in society. And this spirit of giving remains. People traditionally celebrate the day by eating confectionery and sharing it with the people they love to show that they care. Romantic couples often use the event as an excuse to indulge in a little gift-giving. (Source: www.daysoftheyear.com)
