Moretz Stadium

Moretz Stadium is home to Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears of the South Atlantic Conference and also hosts commencement and campus events as well as community functions like concerts, high school graduations, camps and youth sports matches.

Built in 1924, Memorial Stadium is one of the oldest stadiums in NCAA Division II and provides fans with top-notch facilities and an unforgettable game day atmosphere.

In 1989, Helen and Leonard Moretz Stadium was renamed in honor of the couple's longstanding support for LR. Initially sharing space with the baseball program, this stadium underwent major renovations when a new baseball field was constructed and major improvements made to its football facility.

Due to its age, Lenoir-Rhyne University decided to undertake a full renovation. The $18 million project will provide nationally competitive facilities for Division II athletics at the university, facilitate recruitment of student-athletes and further solidify Lenoir-Rhyne's place as an institution renowned for both academic and athletic success.

At every turn of the renovation project, Lenoir-Rhyne's traditions and brand are brought to life through design elements such as grandstands, press boxes, President's Suites, VIP seating/viewing areas for lacrosse players and fans alike, scoreboards in concessions/restrooms and Walk of Champions which all showcase the school's identity and culture.

The renovation is expected to begin in December 2021 and be completed before the football season. To fund this crucial upgrade, private donors have already made early commitments - including Marilyn and John Moretz with a lead gift of $50,000.

Though the facility will be completely renovated, it will remain an iconic part of the LR experience as the site for home football games, men's and women's lacrosse matches, commencement ceremonies and campus events.

On Saturday, October 13, the L-R football team will face off against Virginia St. in Moretz Stadium for their season opener. Tickets are available and fans are encouraged to join us and cheer on the Bears!
