A kilometer is 1,000 meters. So how many meters are in a kilometer? If one kilometer is 100,000 meters, then how many meters would there be in a kilometer? When you multiply 100,000 by 1,000, you get a meter. The metre, or meter (US), is a measure of length. The metre, or meter (US), is a measure of length. It is the basic unit of length in the metric system and in the International System of Units (SI), used around the world for general and scientific purposes. The symbol for metre is m. Historically, the metre was defined by the French Academy of Sciences as 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the equator to the north pole through Paris. Now, it is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures as the distance travelled by light in absolute vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. This is approximately the distance from floor to hip bone on the average barefoot man. See all conversions for meters here.

History/origin: Originally, in 1793, the meter was defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. This changed in 1889, when the International prototype metre was established as the length of a prototype meter bar (made of an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% iridium) measured at the melting point of ice. In 1960, the meter was again redefined, this time in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. The current definition of the meter is effectively the same as the definition that was adopted in 1983, with slight modifications due to the change in definition of the second. Kilometer

A meter is a SI unit scientifically accepted as the base unit of distance and length. Along with other units like a kilometer or an inch, a meter is one of the fundamental units in SI. One meter equals to the length of the path that a light travels in vacuum for the time of 1/299,792,458 second. SI symbol for meter is m, and one meter is 100 cen. First of all just type the kilometer (km) value in the text field of the conversion form to start converting km to m, then select the decimals value and finally hit convert button if auto calculation didn't work.

If you want to convert a unit in a specific value, then change the value in the input box. Then click on the convert button. It is equal to 100 centimeters, 1/1000th of a kilometer, or about 39.37 inches. (Source:www.calculateme.com)
