The Broad is made for people with short attention spans. Viewers can whip through the museum and get to see a lot of known artworks in a concentrated space. There's a Yayoi Kusama "Infinity Mirrored Room" in the permanent collection, which requires a reservation long in advance, but it's a must-selfie. You'll want to check out Jeff Koons's "Michael Jackson and Bubbles" (1988), as well as Robert Therrien's "Under the Table" (1994).Diller Scofidio + Renfro worked in close collaboration with Arup on the design of The Broad, helping showcase a “veil-and-vault” concept. This concept removes the normal museum archive and storage area as a place where items go to never be seen again, and instead transforms it into a heavy opaque mass that is always in view, hovering midway in the building. The vault is surrounded by the “veil,” an airy, honeycomb-like structure that spans across the gallery and provides filtered natural daylight. The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation had three goals in providing $60 million to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to fund a new contemporary art museum and art acquisitions: to increase the gallery space for contemporary art at LACMA, to bring great architecture to LACMA’s expansive campus, and to advance L.A.’s stature as a global capital of contemporary art. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the three-story Broad Contemporary Art Museum—or BCAM—opened in 2008 and features 72,000 square feet of galleries and rotating artwork exhibitions.
Available beginning Sept. 20, catalogues on the Broad collection and the design of the building, edited by Joanne Heyler with Ed Schad and Chelsea Beck, will be published by Prestel. “The Broad Collection” will bring together cultural leaders, writers and curators to share their diverse points of view on some of The Broad’s most celebrated artists. Contributors include filmmaker John Waters, music critic Greil Marcus and novelist Siri Hustvedt, among many others. “The Broad: An Art Museum Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro” examines the museum as an architectural landmark and international cultural destination, exploring its history, context and potential impact on downtown Los Angeles through an illustrated roundtable discussion led by architecture critic Paul Goldberger and an essay by critic and author Aaron Betsky.
The Broads started building their collection of postwar and contemporary art more than 50 years ago. They focused on acquiring pieces of their own time as they believe the greatest art collections are built while the art is being made, not by purchasing it in retrospect. (Source: www.tripsavvy.com)
