717 Area Code
Anyone that called the number would have been transferred to Code. It's not enough to know the area code. The number is now defunct, so the area code is immediately useless. If you're a developer looking to learn more about phone networks and how phone numbers work, it's a great engineering project to get familiar with.
The main area code, 717, was one of the original area codes established in 1947. It originally covered the eastern half of the state except for the Delaware and Lehigh valleys, which were in area code 215. It stretched from the Maryland border to the south to the New York and New Jersey borders, making it the largest of Pennsylvania's original four plan areas and the second-largest east of the Mississippi River that did not cover an entire state, after Michigan's 616. The 717 area code covers a lot of North Carolina and can be used over the phone in much of the southern United States.
Area code 717 serves much of south-central Pennsylvania including the larger communities of Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York in addition to many smaller communities within the area code 717 service area. (Source: www.areacodehelp.com)
The 717 area code is found in Lancaster, Ohio and is a telephone area code that was created on January 1, 1984. The 717 area code is overseen by the North American Numbering Plan Administration. According to the NANPA website, there are 933 places in the United States which are covered by the 717 area code. The Lancaster 717 area code telephone code serves 528 square miles and 7,021 people. The prefix for the 717 area is 717.
To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has ordered an area code overlay for the geographic area served by 717. The new 223 area code will be “overlaid” or superimposed over the same geographical area as the 717 area code which generally covers the south-central portion of the state and serves communities such Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York. The overlay does not require customers to change their numbers, but does require that they dial the area code and seven-digit number for all local calls, including calls within the same area code. Beginning September 26, 2017, customers in the 717 area code region requesting new service, an additional line, or in some cases, moving their service may be assigned a number in the new 223 area code.
