For two weeks, I drove across the country from Orlando to Miami, where I got to spend a day working with the Kite Foundation, a nonprofit focused on helping kids in communities in Central Florida. It was a life-changing experience, and I would never want to go back.

Landlocked Orlando lies 235 miles north of Miami, a distance easily covered by car. If the traffic gods are smiling upon you, the journey will take just over three and a half hours. If you choose to go by bus, you’ll have to tack on about an hour to your trip, or you can hop on a plane and arrive in less than an hour and a half.The easiest, straightest route involves following the Florida Turnpike. It is essential to remember that the tolls on the Florida Turnpike are collected digitally and hence, it is not possible to pay with cash. While renting a car, make sure to makes necessary inquiries with your rental company with regards to the payment of these tolls. Many companies work directly with Florida’s electronic prepaid tolls services and will charge you only after your trip. Some of the companies that provide car rental services on this route include Alamo, Avis, and Dollar. One can also choose to rent-a-car from the airport. The benefit of this would be that the car can be dropped off at other Airports, and hence a round-trip will not be required.
