Northwestern Basketball

Every year, the Wildcats are able to make a return trip to the NCAA tournament. But its true struggle lies in the regular season. It's time for the Wildcats to channel their full potential and take on the other squads in the conference.

Northwestern's 64-62 win at #10 Michigan State Saturday was its first in E. Lansing since 2009 (8 straight losses). NU's '09 win was its lone victory in 30 games at MSU since a 1984 W. The Spartans first hosted the Wildcats in 1951 and won all 8 games at home that decade; they split 8 MSU home games in the ‘60s and MSU won 8 of 9 in the ‘70s & 8 of 10 in the ‘80s. NU is now 9-52 all-time at MSU. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan basketball had won two games in a row with a rivalry showdown against Michigan State looming — could the Wolverines make it three in a row before heading to East Lansing? Michigan got the lead back up to 5, but a Boo Buie 3 cut it to a meager 2 with 50 seconds remaining. The Wolverines held on to win, 72-70.

It’s not that the Wolverines didn’t play well — they did — but it was a lackluster showing compared to the last three outings, which has a ‘je ne sais quoi’ about them. This game, considered a likely win for the maize and blue, saw Michigan get the job done, but it was far from easy. and have won only one other conference title, in 1933. It has only finished above fourth place twice since World War II, and did not have a winning record in conference play from 1968 until 2017. During that time, only the 2003–04 team even managed a .500 conference record. On March 1, 2017, the Wildcats won their 10th conference game (a 67–65 win over Michigan) to clinch their first winning Big Ten record in almost half a century. That season also saw the Wildcats make their first NCAA Tournament in school history, winning their first NCAA tournament game 68–66 against Vanderbilt. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)
