We offer a carefully curated selection of plants native to New England, as well as some species and varieties from across the eastern U.S. that appear in the living collections at Garden in the Woods. Our assortment shifts a bit with the season, so you’ll find plants in stock when they are in bloom.
Many of our plants start from seed that our staff and volunteers harvest sustainably in the wild throughout the region. In line with Native Plant Trust’s mission to support biologically diverse landscapes, we aim to increase the proportion of seed-grown plants available for sale, so that you can expect an ever-increasing selection of genetically diverse New England natives that will enhance climate-change resilience and create wildlife habitat. Seed collection and germination rates determine availability, and we have increased our seed collecting effort. Meanwhile, we offer selections and varieties that remain truest to the species type.Growing your own plants from seed is the most economical way to add natives to your home. Before you get started, one of the most important things to know about the seeds of wild plants is that many have built-in dormancy mechanisms that prevent the seed from germinating. In nature, this prevents a population of plants from germinating all at once, before killing frosts, or in times of drought. To propagate native plants, a gardener must break this dormancy before seed will grow.
3-packs and trays of 32, 38, or 50 plants leave our Midwest greenhouses based on species readiness (being well-rooted for transit) and order date; Spring shipping is typically early May through June, and Fall shipping is mid-August through September. Potted 3-packs and trays of 38 plugs are started from seed in the winter so are typically 3-4 months old when they ship. Trays of 32/50 plugs are usually overwintered so are 1 year old. Plant tray cells are approximately 2” wide x 5” deep in the trays of 38 and 50, and 2.5" wide x 3.5" deep in the 3-packs and trays of 32; ideal for deep-rooted natives. Full-color tags and planting & care instructions are included with each order. If you’re wanting to make an impact and stay connected to your heritage and the environment, native plants are the answer. These trees, shrubs, and bushes work together to create beautiful landscapes for you, but also in restoring the regional landscape. Nothing is better than enjoying native plants that speak to what’s going on around them. This creates a healthy environment for everyone. Once they are planted and rooted, there is no need for additional irrigation because they learn how to soak up the rain. (Source: www.tnnursery.net)
