Under all the surface witticisms, he had a serious knack for running classic pieces through a wringer of irony or surrealism. Chanel-isms were his favorite trope, though he also poked fun at Jean Paul Gaultier’s lingerie dressing and put out pasta bags in a parody of the Prada accessories craze. After his death, Rossella Jardini, his friend and colleague, carried on Moschino’s legacy of fun for nearly 20 years. Since 2013, the American enfant terrible Jeremy Scott has reinvigorated the label with over-the-top runway antics, collabs with the likes of Barbie, riffs on iconic logos from McDonald’s to Marlboro, and a general feel-great vibe.

He joined Moschino in 2013. Since then, he has continued to make fashion headlines with his eye-catching catwalk designs and smile-inducing (yet always utterly chic) accessories: bags in the shape of traffic cones, for instance, with a dress like a giant yellow feather duster, or a life-size collection of paper doll clothes – collections which have continued the fun and irreverence, introducing Moschino to a new generation. In October 2008, Moschino SpA and Altana SpA, leading companies in the children's clothing sector, announced the signing of an agreement for the creation, development and world distribution, for five years renewable, of the Moschino boys’ and girls’ collections. The collections, whose creative aspect remains at Moschino, were aimed at three age groups: Moschino Teen for ages six through fourteen; Moschino Kid for twelve–eighteen months to six years; and Moschino Baby from one–three months to two years.

The designs might be tongue-in-cheek – but inside, the juice is approached with the seriousness you’d expect of any fine fragrance brand. Moschino’s perfumers have included the revered Alberto Morillas (Moschino Fresh Couture) and Fabrice Pellegrin (Moschino 2, on which he collaborated with Morillas). For the first masculine Moschino fragrance, Toy Boy – see the black bear flacon, left – they recruited the gifted Yann Vasnier, whose composition fuses Italian bergamot, nutmeg, pink berries, clove, rose absolute, flax flowers, vetiver, magnolia, amber and Cashmeran for a spicy-woody-ambery creation that becomes highly intriguing, on male skin.
