April 5, 2020 edit: I've been getting more PMs and messages about this post lately (like this awesome one last night sent to my company's IG), possibly from the historic layoffs in the US due to COVID–19. Whether or not that's the case for you, I sincerely hope this resume format helps you find a better job than you had going into this mess. In addition to having S&G help how we can, I'm going to do my best to answer Reddit PMs and emails that come in re: job hunting during April as people face this crisis. (Please at least edit your resume into my format below before asking me for a critique, as my first advice to anyone who hasn't will be to guide you to my format.) All my best to you and yours, and I hope you're all staying safe out there.

Use

A cool design can work in your favor. Employers would look at hundreds of resumes with the same exact design. If you think a little bit out of the box, it might work for you. I was invited to at least one interview just to explain how I've made it in Word ("I just used a couple of text boxes to align the text the right way" "Oh... Hey , he's the guy with that resume design, remember. He used text boxes"). On the other hand, I was criticized on one interview for NOT having the same old boring design (Joke's on them though, I got the job).

Not necessarily related to the resume, but DO use a professional external recruiter to help you. The resumes I receive direct from job seekers are 99% of the time not even remotely appropriate for the job. I ignore most of them. I let the recruiters do the filtering for me. They can also help match you to a job better and help advertise your future potential to companies. NOTE: I think this is a phenomenon specific to IT jobs. Might not apply if you're trying to find a minimum wage job or something that requires professional certification like teaching or legal. (Source: www.reddit.com)
