We all know how many teaspoons of sugar are in a cup of ice cream, but how many calories are in a scoop of vanilla? What about a scoop of chocolate? Are there even any calories in this all-sugar-free, all-natural almond slivers?

Almonds

Almonds are a great between-meal snack that both fills you up and provides a nutritional punch. One handful of nutrient-dense almonds gives you not only 6 grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fiber, and 75 mg of calcium, but also 13 grams of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are the heart-healthy fats that may help lower total cholesterol and LDL (monounsaturated fats help raise HDL levels too), which can decrease the risk of heart disease.

A serving of almonds has 162 calories, 14 grams of heart-healthy unsaturated fat, and 6 grams of protein, and when snacking on almonds, portion control is key. One serving of almonds is 23 almonds, which equals 1 ounce, ¼ cup or about 1 handful. One portion should fit into a small spice bottle or baby food jar or – if you're snacking at the office – should cover the surface of one 3"x3" sticky note. Use the photo above to help you remember, or put old baby food jars or spice bottles to new use as almond snack-containers. (Source: www.foodnetwork.com)

Weight

Likewise, how many almonds should you eat a day? How many almonds should you eat to lose weight and trim your waistline? In this particular study from Penn State, participants consumed 1.5 ounces of almonds which is approximately 30-35 almonds per day. This is slightly greater than the current daily recommendation of a 1-ounce serving which is about 23 whole almonds.

Almonds are rich in magnesium and nutrients which promote hair growth. By preventing dandruff and hair damage, almond provides sufficient nutrition to the hair follicles that make the hair strands stronger, thus reducing hair fall. (Source: askinglot.com)

Serving

A typical serving size of almonds is generally one ounce, or 20-24 whole almonds. This serving size contains about 163 calories and 14 grams of fat, primarily healthy monounsaturated fat along with omega-3 fatty acids. Along with this, there are 3.5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of fat.

It turns out you can eat too many almonds. It doesn't matter if they're whole or used as a substitute like almond flour or almond milk. Overconsumption of any type of food, even healthy nuts, can counteract your health or weight-loss efforts. And when they're used as substitutes, they might even contain more calories.
