Your other questions: Style and strategy: We like a direct and plain-spoken writing style. This means saying things like "use" instead of "utilize", and avoiding "flowery" language when possible. The last thing I want is for your resume to look like you're trying too hard. I would never call our writing casual, it's just not uncharacteristically stuffy. Contrary to the length of my responses here on Reddit, I also believe in writing the shortest resume possible to get the job done. This often means writing a longer one than is necessary, then making decisions about what to cut. This ensures we follow my in-house rule of "nothing but awesome on the page".
Eliminations: If you're still listing your references or a note such as “References available upon request” at the bottom of your document, it's time to stop. This information is unnecessary and taking up precious resume real estate. Similarly, there's no need to list your street address at the top of your resume. If you're searching for a position in your current location and want employers to know you're a local candidate, include your city and state. However, leave your street address off to protect yourself from potential identity theft and free up another line of text.
For example, if you recently graduated from college and did not participate in many of the resume boosters mentioned above (e.g. internships, co-ops, volunteer work, extracurricular activities), then you likely won't have enough material to warrant a second page. The last thing you want to do is add irrelevant details, include outdated information, or get creative with your format in order to extend your resume to a second page.
