For those clients who have not had to conduct a job search for awhile, they may not be familiar with the true differences between a job application and a resume. I have been asked, “Why should I send a resume if I will have to fill out a job application?” Or, sometimes clients assume that a job application and a resume detail the exact same information. They don’t contain the same information; in fact, a resume is your chance to shine.

In a CV, for example, if you are applying for a job in education, you might want to put your teaching experience at the top of your CV. In a resume, you might include only the work experience that relates directly to the job you’re applying for. You can also include keywords from the job description in your resume or CV. Include highlights of your education, experience and background that are relevant to the position. State exactly what documents you are attaching or enclosing: resume, transcript, references or testimonials. Provide additional information not contained in the resume, such as your availability dates for an interview and your follow-up procedure.

A resume provides a brief summary of your education, skills, work experience and accomplishments. A well-written resume speaks loudly and clearly about your value as a potential employee. The performance profile and competency statements contain action words and the appropriate keywords -- words and phrases that represent knowledge, skills and abilities required for the industry.
