Music

Ron Reid is a bassist, steel drummer, composer and educator. He is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Writing and Production at Berklee College of Music where he teaches arranging, ensemble and steelpan instruction. Ron grew up in Trinidad and spent the early years of his performing career with the Banyan Television Workshop, The Trinidad Theatre Workshop and recording calypso soca and world music with a honor roll of Caribbean artists including Lord Kitchener, David Rudder, Andre Tanker, Ella Andall and Lord Relator. A Boston resident since 1985, Ron formed the Sunsteel Sextet in 1988 and later created the Rhythm Earth Ensemble as a vehicle for his horn arrangements. His latest ensemble is the Precious Metals Project. In the US, Ron has performed with Randy Weston, David Williams, Carmen Lundy, Antonio Hart, Grace Kelly and the Caribbean Jazz Project with Dave Samuels among many others. Ron's third CD as a leader will be released this fall.

www.rcc.mass.edu)Justin grew up in the city of Charlotte Amalie on the Island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands where he began playing music at an early age. In 1984, he joined the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra where he played the guitar pan before switching to the tenor or lead pan one year later. Justin earned a Bachelor Degree in Music Production and Engineering from Berklee College of Music in 1993 and has a Master of Science Degree in Broadcast Administration/Television Management from Boston University. In addition to co-founding Pan Loco Steel Band with Bob Lucas, Justin also arranges for several larger steel orchestras in New England including Branches Pan Groove Steel Orchestra (under his musical direction Branches won the local Panorama competition in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002), and in 1999 he helped form the Crystal Panjammers Youth Steel Band on Massachusetts' North Shore. In 2002 he formed the Celestial Infernos Youth Steel Band of St. Cyprians Episcopal Church in Roxbury, MA. He has given lectures on the evolution of the steel pan at colleges throughout the Northeast and the Virgin Islands and had the distinguished opportunity to perform with the late Aldwyn 'Lord Kitchener' Roberts on several occasions.
