Echinochloa Crus Galli
Echinochloa crus-galli is a type of wild grass originating from tropical Asia that was formerly classified as a type of panicum grass. It is commonly known as cockspur (or cockspur grass), barnyard millet, Japanese millet, water grass, common barnyard grass, or simply "barnyard grass" (which may refer to any species of Echinochloa or the genus as a whole however). This plant can grow to 60" (1.5 m) in height and has long, flat leaves which are often purplish at the base. Most stems are upright, but some will spread out over the ground. Stems are flattened at the base. The seed heads are a distinctive feature, often purplish, with large millet-like seeds in crowded spikelets. Some plants have leaves that look like stalks, or only have leaves that look like leaves. One type of plant like this is called a grass.
Echinochloa is a tropical to warm-temperate genus of 40-50 species that are usually associated with wet or damp places. Many Echinochloa species are difficult to distinguish because they tend to intergrade.Echinochloa crus-galli is an Asian species that is now widely distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions of the world (USDA-ARS, 2014). Some taxonomists have interpreted E. crus-galli as just one species, while others have interpreted it much more widely and recognize several infraspecific taxa based on such characters as trichome length and abundance, and awn length. There are several ecological and physiological ecotypes within the species, but the correlation between most of these and the species morphological variation has not been established (Michael, 2003).
