Writing a resume can seem like an overwhelming task, but there are a few simple tips that will make your job a lot easier. We talked to HireMatch CEO and founder, Jonathan Mendonsa and TalentSmart Co-Founder and CEO, Mick Cornett to learn these tips.

A targeted resume is a resume that is customized to specifically highlight the experience and skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for. It takes more work to write a targeted resume than to click to apply with your existing resume. However, it's well worth the effort, especially when applying for jobs that are a perfect match for your qualifications and experience.

Why is so much time spent in creating your resume? Because when it’s done right, it works! An effective resume is a sales pitch to a prospective employer. You are the salesman. Your experience, talents, and education are the products. A well-written resume is one of your best marketing tools. It’s a commercial and you want the hiring manager to want this product. There are 35 different types of commercials, but only six basic approaches. With regards to getting a job, there are four basic resume types: chronological, functional, combination and targeted. Hire

It works well if you have not changed jobs very frequently and could stick to 2-3 organizations maximum. This format shows your growth, your career path, and upward progression well. Since this is a conventional kind of resume, it is preferred mostly by the candidate and the recruiters. This gives a clear picture of your work history. A combination resume is the best of both worlds. It has elements of a chronological resume and functional resume. It is a way for you to highlight your skills, qualifications, and accomplishments while still showing your work experience in the traditional chronological manner. These kinds of resumes help you direct employers’ attention to the skills you’d like to highlight, while still providing a thorough list of your previous work experiences. This way, you have discussed your achievements at a high level while also expressing your ability to support the company you are applying for. You can also include a specific accomplishment if one comes to mind. It is important to quantify your experience everywhere possible. By now, you may have heard that hiring managers don’t spend too much time on a resume before deciding if it’s rejected or worth a further read.
