Miami Ohio ends its non-conference slate at 6-5 after picking up an 80-56 home win over Division III Spalding University with no betting line available in its most recent game on December 21. Buffalo last played on December 18 in a 65-64 loss to the rival Canisius Golden Griffins as a 16-point favorite at a neutral site, falling to 6-4 overall this season.
There were some bright spots for Buffalo during the non-conference slate, but it was an ugly finale as the Bulls lost to in-city rival Canisius as a massive favorite back on December 18. The Golden Griffins built a lead as big as 14 points with 16 minutes to go before Buffalo responded with a 17-2 run to get back in the game. Buffalo even led 64-60 in the final minute, only for Canisius to get the win on an Ahamadou Fofana three at the buzzer. Even with that horrendous loss, Buffalo is still an excellent 6-2 against the spread including solid wins over Western Kentucky and North Texas as a slight underdog. Overs are 4-4 for the Bulls, with each of their last three games against DI opposition going under the betting total. Buffalo is coming off an ugly performance, but that kind of thing can happen to anyone in a rivalry game and this is a deep, talented team that enters conference play 21 spots higher in KenPom than any other MAC team. After a strong start, Miami Ohio hasn't beaten a Division I opponent since November 17, and this struggling RedHawks defense is going to have too much trouble containing all of Buffalo's weapons on the road.Inconsistent perimeter shooting on a high volume plus that bad defense has led to a few shaky results from Miami Ohio, including losses to Bellarmine, Western Illinois and Indiana State. This is a good spot for Buffalo to bounce back and roll to a blowout, as it is the significantly better team by metrics and has won all three of its home games by double digits so far this year. Offensively, the Bulls are dealing with a fair share of injuries. Quarterback Kyle Vantrease left the Bowling Green game in the late second quarter after sustaining an injury from a sack. Matt Myers checked in for relief duties while Vantrease never returned. However, Vantrease is listed as the starter on this week’s depth chart. Another name appearing on the depth chart is halfback Kevin Marks. The former All-MAC product has not seen the field since Oct. 9, but he’s expected to return to Buffalo’s 25th ranked rushing offense. Currently, the unit has been spearheaded by Dylan McDuffie who has rattled off three consecutive 100-yard games in Marks’ absence for this ground-based offense.Buffalo falls in the middle of the MAC when it comes to points and total yards allowed per game. The Bulls are fourth in passing yards allowed per game (214.1) but also have surrendered 15 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions. It's likely Miami will lean towards Gabbert's arm once again, which means getting pressure on him will be important. Buffalo is first in the conference and tied for eighth nationally with 31 sacks, but the RedHawks have been solid in pass protection, giving up just 12. Miami's defense has been among the stingiest in the MAC this season, as the RedHawks rank second in both scoring (23.7 ppg) and rushing (137.3 ypg) defense and are third in total (356.9 ypg) defense. Buffalo's running game vs. Miami's run defense will be the strength vs. strength matchup to pay close attention to. RedHawks linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. also is someone to watch after he racked up 18 tackles and two sacks in a losing effort against Ohio last Tuesday. (Source: athlonsports.com)
