A recent OFAC advisory warns the civil aviation industry of potential exposure to economic sanctions. This may include airline ground services, catering, ticketing services, and freight booking.

An Iranian airline named Mahan Air was designated by the Treasury Department in 2011 for providing support to the IRGC-QF. According to the Treasury Department, the airline is "a principal conduit for the transportation of weapons to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hizballah group" and other prohibited activities. In addition, the airline was listed on BIS's Denied Persons List.

An Australian freight forwarder was recently designated for its unauthorized involvement in an international transportation scheme involving a sanctioned Iranian airline. Meanwhile, an Iranian businessman was convicted of conspiring to export a U.S.-origin aircraft engine to Mahan.

Evidence gathered during the investigation revealed that Mahan obtained three Boeing aircraft in violation of Regulations. These aircraft were then registered in Iran. Afterwards, the planes continued to fly on the airline's routes.

On February 1, 2010, the United Kingdom found Mahan Airways in contempt of court. While the airline's owner, Ali Abdullah Alhay, was removed from the TDO, other parties were still in litigation regarding ownership of the three aircraft.

Other airlines that fly the 747

There are only a handful of airlines that fly the Boeing 747. The largest operator, Lufthansa, has a large fleet of these planes. Other airlines that fly the 747 include El Al, Mahan Airlines, and Corsair.

The Boeing 747 is a great plane for long-range trunk routes and medium flights between major cities. However, they are losing ground as other airlines replace them with newer, twin-engine aircraft.

Lufthansa has 23 Boeing 747s in its fleet. They operate both the -400 and -8I variants. Some of these aircraft are also used for charter flights. In addition to its Boeing 747s, the airline has four A380s.

As of August 2006, Iraqi Airways had two Boeing 747SP aircraft. This type of 747 was originally built for cargo.

The last passenger-only Boeing 747-300 is still in service, having been operated by Mahan Air. It acquired the airplane from Blue Sky, an Azerbaijani airline.

British Airways announced it would retire its Boeing 747 fleet in 2020. However, the airline said it was unlikely to re-start operations.
