Though the specific requirements are different for the two types of sites, they cover the same four aspects: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services. The Blue Flag Campaign is owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). .To be granted Blue Flag status for beaches , marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators must comply with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and environmental management. The Blue Flag programme is funded in Ireland by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
