Shoneys is a homemade ice cream place. John's father knew how to make delicious homemade ice cream, but no one else in his family had time to do it. Consequently, John's parents started the Shoneys business to provide homemade ice cream for many happy customers. John takes care of the marketing and business side of things. He also helps with the cooking.

At its peak in 1998, the restaurant chain operated or franchised over 1,300 restaurants in 34 states. None of those businesses remains a part of the Shoney's restaurant enterprise today.
