How to Put Cum Laude on Resume

Many recent graduates from both academia and industry have not yet mastered the skill of putting those four little letters we call 'Cum Laude' on their resumes.

If you graduate Magna Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude, these are special honors worthy of noting on your resume. Including these distinctions on your resume is important because such honors show your work ethic and commitment to excellence, qualities employers are always looking for in candidates. Including cum laude on your resume can help make your resume stand out to recruiters and hiring managers. It can also help applicant tracking systems (ATS) pick up these keywords and move your application forward in the hiring process. However, it may be necessary to include both on your resume if the employer requires candidates to list their specific GPA on their resume. You may also want to include both your GPA and your cum laude distinction on your resume if your school has unusually high requirements for earning the cum laude distinction and you want to make that point stand out. If this is the case, you can simply list your GPA in parenthesis next to your cum laude distinction.

Cum laude is a distinction given to students when they graduate to recognize their hard work and achievement level during their college careers. This recognition is Latin for ‘with honor’ or ‘with praise’ and is one of the three Latin honors distinctions available. The other Latin honors recognitions include summa cum laude and magna cum laude. Each university or college varies in its requirements to receive academic honors, but most academic institutions require a certain grade-point average, credit hours completed, and class rank at the completion of the individual’s college career.
