FutureStarrA Future Stars Development Team
At the recent Future Stars Development Team meeting, which consisted of 13 first-year Web Development students, the team passed out during the first session and were unable to function by the end of the day. We were supposed to be working on a project for their end-of-semester project, but instead, we found ourselves more interested in the team and their development than our own project.
The Future Stars Program is an athlete development and education program. The Future Stars Program consists of five age groups: 8-year-olds, 9-year-olds, 10-year-olds, 11-year-olds, and 12-year-olds, who perform selected skills and compulsory routines on the six men's events plus trampoline, strength and flexibility evaluations. The 8 and 9-year-old divisions participate up to the Regional level while the 10, 11, and 12-year old divisions can qualify to the National level.
The Junior National Development Team is determined through the use of a "Future Stars" National Championships/Evaluation held in the fall of each year. The competition targets the 10, 11, and 12-year old age groups of athletes and involves athletes being judged/evaluated on the six events using a basic skills compulsory routine composed of approximately ten basic skills elements placed together in routine form. In addition, there are events that involve evaluation on trampoline, flexibility, strength and body positions. The evaluations are done by a coach/Junior National Coaching Staff member and a NGJA judge working together to produce a score based on technique and execution. (Source: usagym.org)
The Future Stars Championships are divided into three age groups. The three age groups, the number of athletes who will be named to the National Development Team from the Future Stars National Championships and the number of athletes who will be invited to a special Development Team camp are below. Information about the current championships will be placed on the Men's Program Events page.
Congratulations to Region 9’s Reid Holbrook for being named the JO NAL on Vault for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The JO NALs (Junior Olympic National Apparatus Leader) serve as the head judge at Future Stars, The Blackjack Championship, and Junior Nationals each year. It’s a tremendous amount of work which Region 9 judges have had the honor of performing for many years. Dean Schott, Bob Busse, Mike Brey, John Scanlan, Eric Cramer, and Tom McNamee have previously served as JO NALs. (Source: region9-gymnastics.com)
