Alabama Versus Georgia
The SEC Championship Game was a close one this year in Birmingham. Georgia missed a potential tying field goal at the end and the American Athletic Conference champions edged the SEC champions. Alabama was nationally ranked and went to the national championship game last year. What does this mean for the two athletic programs heading into the 2019-2020 school year?
The Alabama Crimson Tide captured their 18th national championship by trouncing Ohio State 52-24 for the title last season, moving coach Nick Saban past the legendary Bear Bryant for most all-time with seven. Saban has won six of those with Alabama, with last year's being the third in six years. The 70-year-old looks to repeat for the second time in his career when the top-ranked Crimson Tide (13-1) collide with the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs in the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship game on Monday in Indianapolis. Saban, who guided Alabama past Georgia for the title following the 2017 season, also led the team to back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012.
Robinson, who ran for eight scores during a four-game streak from Oct. 16-Nov. 13 but has gone four contests without reaching the end zone, already is tied with Tony Nathan for 10th in school history with 29 rushing TDs and trails Eddie Lacy by one for ninth place. Despite not scoring in Alabama's 27-6 victory against Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl, Robinson was a beast as he gained a career-high 204 yards on 26 carries. Alabama's defense is sixth in the country (299.8 yards) and third in sacks (46), with sophomore linebacker Will Anderson Jr. registering a nation-high 17.5 - including 14.5 during his current eight-game streak. On December 4, 2021 the two teams met again for the Southeast Conference Championship Game in Atlanta. Georgia was undefeated and ranked number one in the nation at the time while Alabama had one loss and was ranked number three. Alabama again prevailed, 41-24, this time dominating the majority of the game. After both teams prevailed in their national semifinal matchup, the teams again faced off on January 10, 2022, in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, marking the shortest span between two successive matchups in the rivalry. Georgia won the National Championship with a 33-18 victory. This marks Georgia's first National Championship since 1980. It was also Georgia's first win over Alabama since September 27, 2007, snapping a seven-game losing streak against Alabama.
The Crimson Tide went 12-1 on the year and qualified to the College Football Playoff for the third straight year. They were named the top seed at the conclusion of the regular season and were matchup up against an undefeated Cincinnati Bearcat team making their first appearance in the Playoff. Bama put a 27-6 spanking on the Bearcats on New Years Eve as Brian Robinson ran for 198 yards on 25 carries. QB Bryce Young threw for three touchdowns and 181 yard to the Tide back to the biggest game of the year. (Source: en.as.com)
