917 Area Code

New Area Codes Outside the Contiguous United States and Canada

Before 1995, all NANP countries and territories outside the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada shared the area code 809. This included Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each has since been assigned one or more distinct numbering plan areas; area code 809 now exclusively serves the Dominican Republic (along with area codes 829 and 849). The United States Pacific territories of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam joined the NANP in 1997, and American Samoa became an NANP member in October 2004. The Dutch possession of Sint Maarten was originally scheduled to join the NANP on May 31, 2010, but the changeover was postponed to September 30, 2011. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)

The primary area code for all counties of New York City used to be 212, and this was determined by the North American numbering plan from 1947. The Numbering Plan Area (NPA) was redistributed in 1984 when Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island were assigned a different numbering plan area using the 718 area code, and 212 was limited to only Manhattan and the Bronx. What Time Zone Does Area Code 917 Follow?

As is the case in most cities on the United States' eastern front, the Eastern Time (ET) is used in New York for this area code. This time zone is 5 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time or Greenwich Mean Time. Thus, the city adheres to UTC/GMT-5 during the period November to March, but changes to Daylight Saving Time during the months March to November. Therefore, during these months, the 917 area code works in Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), i.e. UTC/GMT-4. If you are making a call to people or companies in the area, this information is very helpful to keep the same time as they do. (Source: www.projecthatch.co)

Like most cities on the eastern front of the United States, this New York area code observes Eastern Time (ET). ET is five hours behind the Coordinated Universal Time or the Greenwich Mean Time. And so, from November to March, the city follows UTC/GMT–5. However, the country switches to daylight savings for the months of March to November. And so, during these months, the 917 area code functions under the Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is UTC/GMT–4. This information is useful when calling individuals or businesses in this area so that you follow the same time as them.
