1969 California St, San Francisco CA 94109

1969 California St San Francisco CA 94109

1969 California St is a beautiful home located in San Francisco, California. It was built in 1915 for Joseph Tobin and Constance de Young. Today, it houses the Gallery at Anthony Meier Fine Arts. The first floor was renovated as an art gallery. The property is located near the Union Square.

Tobin House was built-in 1915 for Constance de Young

Located at 1969 California St., the Tobin House was designed by renowned architect William Polk, who was inspired by medieval English architecture and favored restrained decoration. He criticized the late Victorian aesthetic of San Francisco, and used restrained ornamentation to create a contemporary house that would blend in with the neighborhood. The house is located next to the estate of de Young, which was demolished in the 1940s. Today, the only remaining piece of estate is a decorative concrete lamppost base.

The Tobin House is a beautiful, four-story home with five bedrooms and five full bathrooms. It has a two-story central window facade. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The current owners must get a permit for any alterations or new construction.

The de Youngs had initially purchased two adjacent lots for their estate and wanted to have twin homes. They commissioned the famous architect William Polk to design both houses. He originally wanted the two homes to be twin structures connected by an archway. But for whatever reason, Polk stopped construction on the right-hand side of the estate. Local legend suggests that the de Youngs wanted to stay on their estate.

The Tobin House was built in 1915 and was designed by Willis Polk. It is an example of Tudor Gothic Revival architecture and one half of a pair of homes. Its design was influenced by medieval architecture. The half-arch that ends abruptly in the middle of the house is reminiscent of medieval architecture.

The Tobin House was home to both Constance de Young and her sister Helen de Young. An archway was planned to connect Tobin House to Michael Henry de Young's massive mansion, but was never completed. After Helen de Young decided not to move, the archway remained unfinished. Today, a red brick building stands where the former home stood.

In the 1940s, opera singer Gualtiero Bartalini purchased the house and ran it as a rooming house for artists. He hosted lively parties and entertained guests. In 1946, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Bartalini entertained over 100 people at her extravagant parties. A 1961 article described Bartalini as a "witty raconteur." His biography Opera Psychotherapy, which was published in 1981, was considered relevant today.

The de Young family was a rich and influential family in San Francisco. The de Youngs had settled in the city during the Civil War, and they soon established their dominance in the newspaper industry. Michael de Young and his brother Charles were founders of the Daily Dramatic Chronicle. The Daily Morning Chronicle would eventually change its name to the San Francisco Chronicle and would become the city's most popular newspaper.

Tobin House was built-in 1915 for Joseph Tobin

Tobin House is an historic landmark in San Francisco, California. It was built in 1915 by architect Joseph Tobin. The house was built as a modern Tudor-style mansion, complete with steep slate-clad roof. The gray facade is punctuated by a lion gargoyle. The house has never been painted.

Tobin House was sold in 1940 to opera singer Gualtiero Bartalini, who operated it as a rooming house for artists. He held lively parties in the house, and was noted as a witty raconteur. He published a book, Opera Psychotherapy, in 1961. Bartalini lived in the house until his death in 1994.

The Tobin House was a perfect match for its owner. Joseph Tobin was an investor, and his wife Constance Tobin, a socialite, was a well-heeled woman who wanted to get ahead in her career. The Tobins had a daughter and a brother, and the two brothers lived next to each other. In the years that followed, the sisters developed a rift between them, according to old newspaper stories.

The Tobins were part of the Hibernia Bank family for several years, and Joseph served on its board. The family was very philanthropic. Joseph Tobin was born in San Francisco in 1878 and went on to study law at Yale Law School. He married Constance de Young in 1908 and they continued the tradition of giving back to the community that was started by their families. They lived on the Peninsula for a long time and lived in the California Street house until 1927.
