A quarter means the one fourth part of a unit which is called “cup”. Generally a quarter is equal to the 1/4th part of something, for example a quarter of sugar or a quarter of an ounce. Sometimes when I’m not sure about a recipe but want to try it anyway, I scale down the recipe to 50% of the original. In those circumstances, I found it very difficult to calculate 50% of 3/4 cup, or to measure 50% of 1.5 tablespoon, etc. Then I found this handy table in my “Baking for Dummies” book. For instance 3/4th of a cup is equal to 12 tablespoons, so half of it would be 6 tablespoons.
If you are beginner in cooking, I would recommend measuring all the ingredients and preparing them before you start making the recipes. Once you get used to the process and method of cooking and you get some knowledge, you can go by andaaz method (eyeballing the ingredients).
