Since William Morgan founded volleyball in 1895, it has undergone many changes. From being a popular recreational activity to an important collegiate and scholastic endeavor, volleyball's rules have evolved numerous times over its century-long existence.

Court dimensions

Volleyball is a sport that demands plenty of space. Whether playing international, collegiate or club volleyball, the court dimensions must meet all regulations set forth by FIVB, NCAA, NFHS and USA Volleyball.

When measuring a court's size, there are several methods to take into account. The most obvious measurements involve its length and width; however, for more precise results, take into account the height of the net as well as free space around for players to maneuver around.

To accurately measure a volleyball court's dimensions, use an official volleyball measuring device. Most of these tools are free and available at sporting goods stores.

Manoa, one of UH's 10 campuses, boasts hundreds of undergraduate and professional degrees; an excellent research program; and nationally-ranked NCAA Division I athletics. Researchers possess world class expertise in tropical agriculture, tropical medicine, oceanography, astronomy, electrical engineering, volcanology, evolutionary biology, comparative philosophy/religion studies as well as Hawaiian studies/Pacific Islands studies/Asian studies.

Students at the university are offered a wide variety of recreational activities and services, such as competitive intramural sports leagues and tournaments; informal recreation; non-credit classes and activities; and equipment rental programs. It also has an award-winning student athlete support program and comprehensive athletics website with all the latest news. Volleyball requires the following equipment: the volleyball court, net, posts and antennae. Measuring 18 meters x 9 meters with a free zone measuring 2 meters on all sides, this court is enclosed by an eighteen foot long and three foot wide padded volleyball net that measures 32 feet long by 3 feet wide.

Antennas on volleyball nets measure 1.8 meters long and attached to the outer edge. Posts are spaced 0.5-1 meter outside each sideline and stand 2.55 meters high, made out of round, smooth plastic that helps cushion injuries for players.

Volleyball players typically wear clothing that is light and airy to allow for maximum flexibility and breath-ability. Furthermore, they should don socks that absorb sweat to reduce blistering.

For more experienced players, a volleyball camp on Oahu offers the chance to hone their skills and play with top athletes in the area. Held at Chaminade University in Honolulu, this event is open to both local and visiting students alike.

UH Manoa's women's volleyball team is directed by a head coach and two assistant coaches, who are in charge of teaching and training the players. As a collective unit, they have achieved remarkable academic success with an impressive super academic progress rate of 984.

Positions

Volleyball players are assigned a position during each game. Common positions include left front, middle front and right front. The team captain determines the rotation of these players according to his or her expertise.

Rotating players is essential, as it guarantees each has an appropriate place when receiving a serve from the opposing team. Without proper positioning when the ball is served, scoring can become very challenging.

Typically, the right front and left front positions are reserved for the top players on a team. These individuals tend to be physically dominant and are responsible for defending the front of the court.

Another key position in volleyball is the middle blocker. These players are responsible for blocking balls hit by opposing teams' outside hitters and also setting and serving the ball.

If you are interested in playing volleyball at the collegiate level, start by creating a list of colleges you would like to play for. Once this list is created, reach out to the coaches at these institutions via email or filling out a recruiting profile on their website. Moreover, attending mainland tournaments is an excellent opportunity to meet these coaches face-to-face.

Offense

The offense is a team's ability to score points by hitting the ball over the net and onto the floor of their opponent's side of the court. Conversely, defense can score by preventing the offense from hitting the ball, making contact with it after it hits, or blocking serves that miss the net.

The offensive players on the team strive to get the ball over the net quickly and efficiently. This can be accomplished through various offensive strategies, such as hitting it high or low, hitting near midcourt, or hitting it to the back row.

One of the most effective ways teams attack is through their setter. They make a quick pass to an outside hitter or middle hitter that relies on timing to beat any blockers.

Team can also utilize a "pipe," which is an explosive set to the back row. The pipe typically stands three or five feet above the setter who hits it into the middle of the court.

Another option is the shoot, which is a quick set to the middle hitter that can be either high or low. This set works best when teams want to fool their opponent with just one blocker or less.
