The Controversial Decision by Wells Fargo and Bank of America That Customer Fraud Was Cured

  Wells Fargo was cast into disrepute by widespread fraud committed by its employees, such as opening millions of unauthorized accounts and financial products without authorization. Workers described an intense pressure cooker culture that drove them to meet unrealistic sales quotas, leading them to incur steep overdraft fees for consumers such as Ms. Gutierrez. 1. Why Wells Fargo? Wells Fargo is a large US bank that plays an integral role in various sectors of the economy. Wells Fargo is well known for providing banking services like checking and savings accounts, credit cards, global remittance services, mortgages and auto loans as well as wealth management, private banking and investment services. In 2016, it was discovered that Wells Fargo employees had created millions of fake customer accounts without the knowledge or consent of customers in order to meet unrealistic sales goals and hit sales quotas. The bank must demonstrate to investors and consumers that it can change its ways. Over recent months, its stock price has suffered and it is losing market share to rival banks. Over time, Bank of America expanded from there into regional banks before eventually becoming national through acquisitions; such was its fate with Countrywide Financial and Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc in 2008. That year saw $20 billion awarded as government aid against bad assets through the Troubled Asset Relief Program. After these events, Bank of America became even more visible with an expanded presence throughout the West, Midwest and beyond. Furthermore, this bank played an instrumental role in supporting economic recovery efforts while investing for tomorrow through sustainable initiatives. Bank of America may be widely recognized, yet the bank has experienced several difficulties over time. In 2022, federal regulators fined Bank of America for mismanaging unemployment benefits during a pandemic outbreak. Both Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Office of Comptroller of Currency found that Bank of America used an inadequate fraud detection system and then gave customers no recourse when there wasn't actually any fraudulent activity occurring in their accounts. As a result, the bank reduced fees and improved transparency around its charges, as well as initiating a campaign to help people recover their money. Consumers looking for access to local branch networks, ATMs and an excellent mobile app may still consider Bank of America an appealing choice, however savings and CD yields compared to other banks are low and monthly fees may quickly add up for some customers. 3. Wells Fargo alone has lost over $800B in market value during this time, much of it due to depreciation on agency mortgage-backed securities positions. Banking can be an intricate business; no single institution can fulfill everyone's banking needs perfectly. But both Wells Fargo and Bank of American have unique offerings that may help meet them more closely.
