best movies on netflix right now

Netflix is one of the premier streaming services, boasting some of the finest movies you'll ever watch. From high-concept action-adventure epics to romantic comedies, there's something here for everyone.

Peter Jackson's Academy Award-winning Middle-Earth trilogy is a must-watch for fantasy fans - and it's available to stream now on Netflix!

The Raid 2

The Raid 2 is an epic gangster family drama featuring plenty of martial arts action. Directed by Gareth Evans, The Raid 2 follows Iko Uwais' character Rama as she rises through the ranks of law enforcement and is assigned to infiltrate an infamous crime lord.

The Raid 2 is much bigger in scope, yet much more focused than its predecessor due to Evans' story-arc.

There are times when the plot moves slowly and wordy, but ultimately this works in its favor. The main story arc revolves around command structure and how it's used to infiltrate a highly dangerous gang.

This movie follows a more somber path than its predecessor, though there are still plenty of action sequences to enjoy in The Raid 2. Nonetheless, The Raid manages to successfully balance these two aspects of its plotline.

One of the most remarkable aspects of The Raid 2 is how realistically and stylishly its fight scenes remain. Director Gareth Evans claims that these main battles were planned and choreographed months in advance to guarantee actors could execute punches and kicks accurately, creating a truly realistic look onscreen.

The Burbs

Few places can be as simultaneously serene and terrifying as American suburbs, where cookie-cutter houses and lush green lawns conceal an unseen menace beneath. This theme has been explored in a number of classic films such as The Graduate or Edward Scissorhands.

In The Burbs, a quiet suburban street is shaken by the arrival of an eccentric family named the Klopeks. These new neighbors remain mysterious, staying indoors and never coming out during daylight hours; living in what appears to be a 'Munsters'-esque house filled with suspicious evidence of foul play.

This film's humorous beats and unique blend of comedy and horror make it a joy to watch. Director Joe Dante (Piranha, Gremlins) delivers his bittersweet take on suburban life through an exhilarating blend of comedic elements and gory gore.

Tom Hanks stars as Ray Peterson, a suburbanite whose plans for an idyllic vacation at home are disrupted when mysterious new neighbors move in next door. Together with his motley crew of strange neighbors, Ray decides to investigate the new family: which includes a Vietnam veteran, an uptight teen, dog owner and level-headed wife.

This film offers a thrilling journey with an excellent ensemble cast. Hanks, Fisher and Dern all give outstanding performances as their characters become increasingly obsessed with the mysterious neighbors.

The Woman King

Gina Prince-Bythewood's muscular action epic is an exciting addition to Netflix, boasting not only an all-female cast but also the kind of historical epic that doesn't get made very often.

Set in the 1820s, The Woman King follows an all-female warrior unit in West Africa as they defend Dahomey from King Ebola (Viola Davis). Led by General Nanisca (Viola Davis), these women are trained to fight or die.

A new enemy threatens the kingdom, and the Agojie must prepare their next generation of warriors before they can defend it. Additionally, the film tackles some difficult topics such as racism and sexism in history as well as slavery.

Overall, The Woman King is a remarkable film. It may not be perfect, but it's an incredibly powerful and poignant tribute to Black sisterhood and strength.

Viola Davis leads an incredible cast that is both inspirational and strong. Together with Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin they give remarkable performances that deserve all of the praise showered upon them.

The Woman King is a refreshing reimagination of the classic Hollywood epic that feels fresh and confident in its approach. In today's American cinema, it's rare to find movies with such skill and assurance - let alone one that doesn't feel cheesy or overly polished. This film succeeds on all counts.

The Favourite

The Favourite is an odd movie, but it's also very good. Set in the 1700s, it follows Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) as she rules England alongside her best friend Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz).

This film is different than most period pieces in that it doesn't focus on happiness or cheer as much as sadness and desperation. It's an emotionally charged film that takes us into these women's lives during their time period and shows them to be just like us in our own times.

Though this movie has some issues, I still enjoyed watching it because of how well written the script is. The characters are all well-crafted and the storyline keeps my interest throughout.

One thing that disappointed me about this movie was its ending. While I understood it to be a metaphor, it wasn't as clear-cut for me as I wished for.

Yorgos Lanthimos has always been known for his unconventional movies that focus on household dynamics. This latest offering does not disappoint - it's an insightful satire of class, gender inequality and the nature of power.

Hustle

After being dismissed as a basketball scout, Stanley finds purpose again when he encounters an incredibly gifted young player in Spain. Driven by new determination, Stanley embarks on his mission to groom this player for the NBA.

Jeremiah Zagar's Hustle is a perfect example of this, focusing on the human story with skill and passion. Adam Sandler's charm shines through here in spades, while director Zagar's unflappable focus on character chemistry makes for an exhilarating ride.

Zagar's story may be a rehash of classic hoop-movie cliches, yet it never feels stale. Instead, it's an affecting and beautifully crafted dramedy that pays homage to Happy Madison's earlier films (such as Jerry Maguire or The Way Back) rather than LeBron James and Maverick Carter's SpringHill Company offerings.

The film also has plenty of heart, particularly when it spotlights Stanley's relationship with his wife Teresa (Queen Latifah) and their daughter Alex. Even if their love is sometimes overshadowed by Stanley's cunning scouting instincts, their bond remains evident whenever they share the screen.

Hustle is an essential watch for basketball fans on Netflix right now, boasting an impressive cast of experienced and up-and-coming players such as Oscar nominee Robert Duvall, Ben Foster, Jordan Hull, Queen Latifah, Maria Botto and former NBA star Kenny Smith. Additionally, Sandler has become much more genuine over the years and appears to be having a blast on screen.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Glass Onion, Rian Johnson's latest whodunnit mystery, follows on from Knives Out - an elegant Agatha Christie-inspired whodunnit that made a big impact in 2019. With its quirky plot twists, vibrant performances and shocking revelations, Glass Onion will surely appeal to fans of both genres and director Rian Johnson alike.

Glass Onion features an ensemble cast of outsize characters, including a tech billionaire (Edward Norton) and his friends who are all dependent on him financially. Claire (Kathryn Hahn), a politician Miles funds for her campaign, and Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), a scientist at his company who's asked to develop an unstable new kind of fuel.

Johnson's first film focused on a group of stunted relatives who put on an act of respectability, while Glass Onion centers around the rich and their greedy ways. Kate Hudson stars as Birdie (Kate Hudson), a famous former supermodel prone to saying offensive things, while Jessica Henwick stars as Peg, her assistant.

Johnson plays with the structure of whodunnits in several ways. He opens up a murder half way through, then reverses everything and starts from the beginning again - an ambitious gamble that pays off handsomely. Glass Onion is ultimately an enjoyable film without compromising its moral conscience; it's one of Netflix's top picks right now for anyone wanting to escape for an hour and get immersed in an engaging whodunnit.
