This case has far-reaching ramifications for companies across various sectors, as tech algorithms keep billions of people connected and provide them with relevant content like job listings, search engine outcomes, songs and movies.

Wednesday's case, Nawras Alassaf's family, asks whether Twitter violated the Anti-Terrorism Act by failing to remove pro-ISIS content from its platform. If the court rules against Twitter, that could settle both cases without touching upon Section 230.

Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch disagreed, noting that the statute's text did not require an organization-level test for determining if a platform was immune from lawsuits. He further suggested the court send the case back to a lower appeals court for further review.

Meanwhile, another high-profile lawsuit is making its way through the justices that asks whether online platforms should be held liable under the Anti-Terrorism Act for aiding and abetting terrorism by promoting jihadist videos on their sites. In that case, they are also reviewing an appeal of a lower court ruling that Twitter and other platforms cannot be held liable for content they promote.

Both cases, which could have profound repercussions for the Internet as a whole, will likely be decided by the Supreme Court this year. If they rule in favor of plaintiffs, it could trigger an onslaught of litigation against online platforms that would force them to alter their business models and fundamentally alter how we use the web today.
