NPR science correspondent Joe Palca has reported on a range of scientific topics, from NASA's Space Shuttle launches to the Neanderthal genome. Additionally, he created "Joe's Big Idea," an ongoing series that delves into the minds and motivations of scientists and inventors. In 1999, Joe took a year off from NPR to study human clinical trials as a Kaiser Family Foundation Media Fellow. Furthermore, Joe is part of NPR's Science Friday team as well as backup host for Talk of the Nation's Science Friday program.
INSKEEP: NPR science correspondent Joe Palca will share with us about BASIC, the programming language he learned about in high school. Invented by MIT professor David Kurtz five decades ago, BASIC enabled programmers to write code without using punch cards like they used to do back then. These punch cards could be connected to a teletype machine connected to the telephone network which then sent that data off somewhere else and was translated and printed out on paper in front of you.
That is why I find programming languages such an immense blessing. They made many things possible for many people and have really inspired me in my work.
