Stimulus Update: Direct $500 Payment to Be Sent to More Than 300 Families
Within the next few days, more than 300 families affected by the coronavirus crisis will receive a direct $500 payment as part of the American Rescue Plan Act and with Congress' authorization.
Residents who filed their 2021 tax returns before February 15 will receive stimulus checks in the mail. The IRS has already confirmed that payments will be made based on information gleaned from those filing federal returns.
When conducting research, it is essential to provide demographic data about participants so that readers can assess the external validity of study results. Demographic information includes age, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, education level and income level; housing situation; health / disability status / employment situation and psychiatric diagnoses among others.
The participant demographics report, often included in the methods section of a research paper, is essential for confirming that participants from various backgrounds and origins were appropriately recruited for the project. This report can include details regarding the size of the pool of participants, whether random sampling, snowball sampling or mixed-sample recruitment methods were utilized, as well as other pertinent details.
For instance, when reporting the sample size of survey respondents, authors should include demographic questions that inquire about gender and age (the number of male and female participants). It would also be beneficial to specify the country and region in which the study took place.
Additionally, when writing participant demographic reports, authors should indicate if the sample was limited to people who self-reported certain characteristics or members of certain groups. For instance, if it was just autism-related individuals, make sure all participants are identified as having this disorder.
Finally, when outlining participant characteristics of a study sample, authors should include the number of participants, their age ranges and standard deviation for that range. This information can help readers assess the external validity of the results from this research as well as serve as an opportunity for future research on this topic.
Although not required in the methods section, it's wise to include this data--especially for larger studies. Authors sometimes struggle to decide the level of detail needed when crafting their methods section, so having some baseline info about the population represented by the study can be immensely helpful. This data helps assess external validity of trial results and plays an integral role in assessing public health and healthcare outcomes.
Participant selection is the process by which a group of people (participants) is randomly chosen to take part in an experiment. This sample can be researcher-selected or self-selected, and it may consist of simple or stratified individuals.
Different methods of participant selection exist, such as researcher selection, self-selection, natural groupings, administrative assignment and random assignment. Each selection has its own characteristics which may affect the internal validity of a study.
Random assignment in a study can establish initial equivalent, while research selection carries external validity due to its interaction with the population. Therefore, for a study to qualify as a true experiment and have causal interpretability, randomization needs to be applied across both types of selection.
The primary distinction between researcher and self-selection is that with researcher selection, researchers determine who is eligible to participate in the study. On the other hand, in self-selection participants do not feel influenced by who researchers assign them; rather they make their choices based on merit alone.
Once participants are selected, they will be divided into groups with similar characteristics to participate in a treatment, task or stimulus for the study. While these groups can vary, all remain linked to the initial equivalence within the experiment.
Participant selection is crucial in order to select a sample representative of the target population. Otherwise, results cannot be generalized and applied widely across other audiences. Internal validity is essential, as it helps to eliminate any potential confounding variables in a study. Therefore, randomization plays an integral role in participant selection and provides the most reliable guarantee of an honest experiment. Random selection is particularly essential when attempting to establish causal interpretability. However, it is not always necessary. For instance, if the experiment tests a casual research hypothesis that doesn't require a large sample size, random selection isn't required.
If you have a qualified dependent under 17 years of age and haven't filed your tax return yet, the IRS is likely to send you your first direct $500 payment via direct deposit or mail. It may be sent either electronically through direct deposit or regular mail.
In addition to sending out one-time payments, some states are also suspending or rolling back gas taxes in an effort to combat the rising prices of fuel and groceries. Florida, for instance, is now providing $450 checks to low-income families as part of its Hope Florida program.
Another state that has taken steps to reduce fuel costs is Alaska, which started offering energy relief payments on top of its annual Permanent Fund dividend in September. This year, each resident can expect a share of around $3,200 from these payments.
These payments are part of the American Rescue Plan that was passed in 2021 and provides people with up to $1,400 in stimulus money when they file their 2021 taxes as a Recovery Rebate Credit.
However, those who receive the Recovery Rebate Credit must still include it on their 2020 tax return for processing. In fact, most people who received this $1,400 stimulus payment in 2021 already did that 12 months ago.
Therefore, the IRS is using 2020 tax returns to decide if families with a new child in 2021 qualify for this payment. Thankfully, however, they have changed their rules so it's now much simpler to apply for this benefit.
Under the new regulations, single taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) of over $80,000, married taxpayers filing jointly with an AGI of $160,000 and head of household taxpayers with AGI of $120,000 may no longer benefit from the $500 economic impact payment. This income window has been extended until 2022 for these families.
It's worth noting that the CARES Act did not preclude incarcerated individuals from receiving stimulus payments (forward or retroactively). If you have any doubts about whether your family qualifies and would like more information on eligibility requirements, visit the website of law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein which brought forth the California lawsuit regarding incarcerated individuals receiving these payments.
Last autumn, the IRS sent letters to 9 million individuals who appeared to have received stimulus payments but hadn't claimed them on their tax returns. These individuals will now be entitled to a final payment in 2021 - known as a Recovery Rebate Credit - through what's now known as a Recovery Rebate Credit.
Many families received the first two rounds of stimulus checks and used them for a variety of items, from home improvement projects to buying a new car. Some were even able to save these funds and pay down debt - though that wasn't always the case.
Experts report that the first checks were largely used for household purchases, while the second and third rounds of payments had more of a general focus. Experts speculate these third rounds might have been used to create an emergency fund, pay off high-interest debt or invest in a future project.
In some states, legislators have proposed more widespread assistance for lower-income households. Massachusetts, for instance, has introduced a bill that would send $250 checks to eligible individuals earning up to $100,000 and $500 to married couples with children. If passed, recipients are expected to begin receiving their checks starting in September.
Illinois will soon be receiving another round of stimulus checks, this time going to over 300 families - single filers and heads-of-household. Governor Bruce Rauner has stated that each check will be worth $1,000 and should arrive in mailboxes by August.
Maine is also providing stimulus checks worth $850 for singles and $1,700 for couples, depending on the number of dependents and their incomes as well as the age of the child.
Some individuals may face reduction or elimination of their payments if they owe overdue child support or other debts. This is especially prevalent for individuals who rely on government benefits like Social Security or Supplemental Security Income.

The IRS has yet to release the total amount that taxpayers should have received in 2021; however, they plan on sending a letter to Americans early next year outlining their entitlement and any plus-up payments they received.
