Stetson Bennett addresses tumultuous offseason at combine

Stetson Bennett IV is an impressive college quarterback who began his career as a walk-on at Georgia. He led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships and is expected to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft.

As the former Georgia signal caller prepares for the NFL Combine, he has addressed some difficult offseason events. The Blackshear, Georgia native has spoken out regarding issues involving some of his teammates and coaches back home.

He’s been truthful

Stetson Bennett has had a turbulent offseason, yet he remains honest throughout it all. At the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday afternoon, the two-time national champion quarterback addressed all of this turmoil during an interview.

At the event, Bennett was asked to address several matters, including his off-field issues and alcohol-related arrest that took place early on Jan. 29 in Dallas while he was prepping for the NFL draft.

He further stated that he has been honest with all teams he's met during the combine. According to sources, the two-time Heisman trophy winner has been forthcoming about any incident with each of the organizations who have reached out to him.

In addition to the alcohol-related incident, Bennett was also criticized for his actions during Georgia's victory parade last month. The Heisman finalist, who did not participate in any postseason all-star games, did so because it was a cultural issue within their program and not one related to performance.

Media coverage of Bennett's situation led to some backlash, though that wasn't necessarily a reflection on his skillset. Instead, there was an impression that Bennett didn't do a good enough job explaining himself.

Bennett has demonstrated his skill as a quarterback throughout his college career at Georgia, throwing for 4,128 yards and 27 touchdowns while also running for 205 yards.

Although his numbers were impressive, it's possible that Bennett will end up as a backup quarterback in the NFL unless he continues to improve. He's not one of the top prospects this year's draft and much will depend on how well he performs during individual meetings and drills at the combine.

He’s working on his footwork

Stetson Bennett, a Heisman Trophy finalist and two-time national champion quarterback for Georgia, had an eventful offseason during his presentation at the NFL Scouting Combine. This included being arrested in Dallas in January for public intoxication as well as receiving a negative review of his actions during Georgia's victory parade last season.

Bennett has made a name for himself both on the field and in the classroom since his days as a walk-on at Georgia. Despite his physical limitations, he led them to back-to-back national titles and is now an advocate for social justice issues.

Bennett, 24, is expected to be a late-round draft pick and must adapt to the pro game. However, he said he is prepared. He gave credit to new Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken for helping him learn the NFL game.

He's focused on perfecting his footwork as he prepares for the combine and some specific throws he will be asked to make during drills. On Friday, he said he isn't worried about specific numbers but rather wants to show off what he can do and wow those watching him.

Bennett has been honing his footwork throughout the offseason, working on technique and arm strength.

Bennett is also working to hone his speed. His goal is to run a 4.67-second time at the combine, which would be significantly faster than his college mark of 4.85 seconds.

NFL personnel evaluators will take note of Bennett's above-average speed as one of the key traits they evaluate. If Bennett can improve upon this trait, it could help offset other shortcomings like his age and lack of height which are factors to be taken into consideration by scouts.

Another potential issue for Bennett is his lack of durability, which coaches may worry about. At 5-11 and 190 pounds, Bennett stands as one of the smallest quarterbacks to play in the NFL.

But if he can improve his athleticism and speed, he could be an ideal pick for an NFL team. But to achieve that goal, Bennett needs to prove himself worthy of being a first-round selection; whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but Bennett possesses the necessary mindset for success at this level of competition.

He’s not caught up on specific numbers

After a turbulent offseason that included his arrest in January, former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett addressed his behavior Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Though criticizing himself in the past for his outbursts, Bennett insisted that it wasn't his fault and it was up to him to take care of himself.

Bennett, 5 foot-11 and 190 pounds, is expected to be a top quarterback prospect in the 2023 draft. However, his below-average size and inability to consistently create big plays at the line of scrimmage will limit his NFL prospects.

Bennett has an athletic frame and the potential for explosive plays in the red zone, but his inability to effectively use his legs to propel the ball downfield limits his potential as a receiver and limits both arm strength and accuracy. Despite these shortcomings, Bennett remains highly motivated and motivated.

In an ESPN interview this season, Kiper praised Bennett as the "fearless leader" of the Georgia offense and noted his improved accuracy this year. He's ranked in the top 10 nationally in passing efficiency and tied for eighth in yards per attempt with 8.9.

Bennett appears to be a lock for the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, though that doesn't guarantee him an absence from consideration.

Bennett has had a distinguished career at Georgia, helping the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships in the 21st century. He remains one of the program's most beloved players.

But in order for Bennett to truly excel as a professional quarterback, he needs the ability to assess the situation quickly and get the ball where it belongs. Additionally, Bennett must have complete understanding of his own personnel so as not to make costly errors that lead to turnovers.

Bennett faces an uphill battle, especially when the team's depth at all positions is so deep. However, Bennett has a good chance to become a reliable backup and add to his already impressive resume.

He’s being honest

Stetson Bennett has certainly made his share of headlines during his brief collegiate career. A former walk-on, he became Georgia's full-time starter in 2021 and 2022, leading them to back-to-back national titles as Heisman Trophy finalists along the way.

Over the past two seasons, he's also had his share of off-field issues that have stained his reputation. Most notable was his arrest in Dallas in January which he addressed with enthusiasm on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. What's especially troubling is that this occurred just weeks after Georgia football had won its first national title since 2007.

Bennett's inability to overcome his off-field issues has prevented him from being considered for an early round selection. At 5-11 and 190 pounds, teams don't know if he can play up to his potential in the pros.

The most impressive part was that he did exactly what one would expect of an athlete of his caliber: he was honest. He revealed to reporters his off-field struggles with teams attending the combine, as well as admitting his off-the-cuff remarks during media events were accurate.

Stetson Bennett has the talent and ability to compete at the highest level, but it's his leadership that will ultimately enable him to reach his professional aspirations. His ability to guide a group of underachieving players towards success will be paramount in his long-term success as an NFL quarterback; therefore, his performance at scouting combines is so crucial.
