On Monday night, snow began falling in Western Massachusetts and parts of Boston area, continuing through Tuesday morning. Snowfall totals are expected to increase throughout the day and could reach as much as a half-foot of accumulation in some locations.

Overnight Monday into Tuesday, heavy snowfall and significant travel issues are forecasted. This could create hazardous driving conditions as snow-covered roads combine with low visibility to make Tuesday morning's commute difficult and hazardous for drivers.

On Tuesday afternoon and evening, high winds are likely to produce blowing snow and power outages, especially in extreme southeastern Massachusetts. Wind gusts in the east-northeast may reach 30-40 mph on Tuesday, which could result in some property damage.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for much of eastern and central Massachusetts, including Boston and Worcester. According to the National Weather Service, areas under this warning could experience up to 5 inches of snow Monday night and Tuesday afternoon along with high winds that may cause tree or limb downing.

On average, 2 to 4 inches of snow is forecast for Boston and western Worcester County. Cape Cod will experience the lightest accumulations with up to an inch of snowfall.

Early today, snowfall will begin to accumulate with increasing intensity throughout central and west-central Massachusetts.

Stormy conditions will also bring sleet and freezing rain to the region, creating slippery road conditions as rain mixes with snow.

Additionally, the National Weather Service is forecasting wind gusts up to 35 mph on Tuesday in parts of western Massachusetts and northeastern New England. This could result in some power outages as well as making Tuesday morning commute a challenge.

On Tuesday night, a storm will bring an unseasonable mix of snow and sleet to southern New England; however, this won't be enough to cause major issues. The Boston metro area should expect moderate to heavy accumulations of snow through Tuesday night while most other parts of New England can expect light to moderate accumulations.

This means hazardous travel conditions are expected to persist across parts of eastern New York, such as eastern Columbia, Essex, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam, Rockland and Suffolk counties along the Hudson River shoreline; northern Herkimer county in the western Adirondacks; and eastern Winham county in southern Vermont.

On Monday night, heavy snowfall is forecast between 9 pm and 5 am with rates around 0.5 inches per hour. This will be especially prevalent at higher elevations.
