Shadow and Bone Season 2 Cast and Character Guide

Netflix's fantasy series Shadow and Bone is based on Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse books, offering viewers a vast world filled with captivating characters that's easy to get lost in its intricate details.

Season 2, Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsev are thrust back into the fight against General Kirigan (aka The Darkling) as they attempt to bring down The Shadow Fold and save Ravka from destruction.

Alina Starkov

Alina Starkov is the main character in Netflix's fantasy series Shadow and Bone, which follows Alina as she discovers her powers as a Sun Summoner - an ancient Grisha with the power to channel and manipulate sunlight.

Last season, Alina and her best friend Malyen "Mal" Oretsev attempted to destroy Darkling General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) but ended up on the run from his army of shadow creatures. Their escape led them across the sea in search of amplifiers that would enhance Alina's power as the Sun Summoner.

Archie Renaux stars as Mal, a bi-racial orphan who was raised at Keramzin orphanage and developed exceptional tracking abilities. He and Alina have been best friends since childhood and in Season 2, they join her on her quest to locate Morozova's stag (Sea Whip), an amplified mythical serpent that increases Grisha power.

Alina and Mal travel to Noyvi Zem, a small island in the ocean where they are protected by local residents. While there, they meet up with Sturmhond - a pirate group.

Malyen Oretsev

When the first season of Netflix's Shadow and Bone premiered, fans were thrilled that it followed closely to Leigh Bardugo's books. As such, viewers were treated to many beloved characters from the book trilogy.

Malyen Oretsev (played by Archie Renaux), Alina's childhood best friend and potential love interest, was one of those characters. He's a loyal friend as well as an expert tracker; something which came in handy while searching for Morozova's stag and The Sea Whip.

After meeting at Keramzin orphanage, Alina and Mal formed a close friendship that endures to this day. Their bond is built upon trust and loyalty; Alina giving Mal her heart while Mal providing her with guidance and advice.

Shadow and Bone follows Alina Starkov, the main protagonist of Shadow and Bone, as she becomes a Sun Summoner - a Grisha with the power to control light. This epic fantasy series follows a world filled with magical beasts and wizards known as Grishas in this magical realm.

The series follows a young girl as she discovers she's a Grisha and embarks on an incredible journey to become the most powerful of them all. Its characters range from fierce magical humans to charming rogues and even martyrs.

Kaz Brekker

On March 16th, the second season of Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone will finally premiere. The first season was a surprise hit and this season features some new faces as well as returning favorites from the books.

Kaz Brekker is the leader of the Crows, a band of determined criminals in Ketterdam, Kerch's capital. His group is shrewd and dangerous, capable of carrying out any task given them for an agreed upon price.

He harbors a personal grudge against Pekka Rollins, the head of Ketterdam's Dime Lions crime gang. Their relationship has a long-standing rivalry; he swindled Kaz's brother to force them to flee to Ketterdam and conned him when he was young.

Kaz is determined not to let his past define him. He's willing to do whatever it takes in order to succeed, even if that means stealing money or killing people.

Freddy Carter portrays The Punisher in The British Netflix series Free Rein and its two spin-off films. Additionally, he has featured in Batman prequel Pennyworth and Jenna Ortega's American Carnage.

If you were a fan of the first season of Shadow and Bone, then you'll be delighted to know that all the cast members who appeared in the series are returning for Season 2. Additionally, Patrick Gibson will join as Nikolai Lanstov in an all-new role.

Many know him only as Sturmhond, but there's more to him than meets the eye. A younger prince of Ravka, he grows close to Alina and becomes her ally during Siege and Storm - an essential book in the series.

But he also harbors a dark secret. He's been transformed into a shadow demon, yet ultimately accepts his illegitimacy and uses his powers for good - protecting those he loves from harm.

The Grishaverse is packed with characters, and Netflix's adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's novels offers plenty of potential story arcs. This season the show is focusing on Siege and Storm (part of Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone trilogy) as well as Six of Crows from his spin-off duology.

Jesper Fahey

Netflix's popular YA series Shadow and Bone has been a sensation since it debuted in April 2021, based on Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse novels. Season 2 is set for release on March 16, bringing with it new characters that will help bring the stories of Siege and Storm, Ruin and Rising to life.

However, the show often diverges significantly from its source material, which can be disconcerting for fans of both books. Nonetheless, it does a commendable job of maintaining some major themes while creating its own version of the story.

That's largely thanks to the cast, which features captivating characters and personalities you want to spend time with. That makes Season 2 of Homeland so enjoyable even if it deviates from its source material.

One of the show's major characters, Jesper Fahey is a skilled gunslinger with an eye for fashion and hats. A close friend of Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), he joins her in her quest to find mythical amplifiers to develop her abilities and destroy The Darkling.

Fahey is one of several new character additions for Season 2. Other characters include Tamar (Jack Wolfe), a Shu warrior who refers to her two axes as "her girls", and Nikolai Lantsov, a Ravkan prince who travels the world under the guise of Sturmhond.

Nina Zenik

Netflix's beloved YA fantasy series, Shadow and Bone, is back for another season. Based on Leigh Bardugo's best-selling books, the show follows daring heroines, powerful rogues and brave adventurers throughout the Grishaverse.

Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) is a Sun Summoner and member of the Crows, an elite secret society of magical humans. With her unmatched power, Alina has traveled around the world fighting for the Grisha Army.

She has an expansive network of trusted friends and family, including Malyen Oretsev and Kahn Brekker. Additionally, she is an adept spy with the capacity to speak six languages fluently and pass off as a native speaker when necessary.

Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan) is an important Ravkan Heartrender and member of the Ravka Army. She displays loyalty, compassion, and ruthlessness when necessary.

Nina falls in love with Matthias Helvar (Calahan Skogman), and makes a deal to get him out of prison. However, her attempts at pardoning him prove unsuccessful; nonetheless, Matthias remains imprisoned at Hellgate near Ketterdam and tragically dies in one of its fight pits. After discovering this truth, Nina becomes even more determined than ever that Pekka Rollins be held accountable for his part in her lover's fate.

Matthias Helvar

As Shadow and Bone prepares for its second season, fans eager to discover more about its characters. In addition to the original cast members, four new actors have joined the show: Anna Leong Brophy, Lewis Tan, Patrick Gibson and Jack Wolfe will all join this Netflix fantasy series in the coming season.

Calahan Skogman, who portrays Matthias Helvar in "Christmas Helvar," is an American actor who has previously featured in several short films. He's described as tall and muscular with blonde hair and the distinctive ice blue eyes of his Fjerdan people.

Before being cast into Hellgate, he was golden-skinned with long blonde hair. However, his appearance drastically altered after the Six Crows breached the Ice Court to avoid identification by other Druskelle. Now pale, bald, and covered in scars, his features have changed significantly.

In the premiere episode of Shadow and Bone Season 2, Matthias Helvar is sent on a shipwreck with Nina Zenik, a young Grisha prisoner. Their struggle for survival challenges Matthias' perceptions about Grisha while creating serious romantic potential between them.

In the end, they become separated and she joins The Crows in their planned heists. Eventually though, they'll be back together again, fighting for their lives once more.
