Although he regretted making such a hasty decision, it had become an easy one at that point in time.

Waters then probed him about his relationship with Jim Griffin. He claimed to have repeatedly instructed Griffin to contact the State and arrange a meeting, yet Griffin never did.

He then asked about any phone calls he made to Boulware during the murders. He claimed he didn't inform him about them because he owed so much money to him and that he stole it through "lies of omission."

Waters then probed Murdaugh about his trip to Columbia to watch a baseball game with Maggie and Buster. He admitted taking pain pills, which was why he'd stayed at the hotel. Additionally, Waters noted that Murdaugh had been stealing from clients and friends.

Waters then reintroduced a blue rain jacket found in his mother's house, as well as a blue tarp believed to be wrapped around gunpowder residue. He also brought back some forensic evidence, such as gunshot residue on Murdaugh's car and clothes.

Murdaugh’s Opening Statement

At opening statements, Dick Harpootlian, Murdaugh's defense attorney, painted Murdaugh as a loving husband and father who had no reason to kill his family at Moselle - their 1,700 acre hunting property. He maintained investigators had drawn premature conclusions and that Murdaugh may have been too traumatized to consider all evidence in an impartial way.

Harpootlian pointed to one line in an interview with state law enforcement officer Senior Special Agent Jeff Croft which he believed did not reflect Murdaugh saying he had killed his son. In the video, Murdaugh is heard telling Croft he had been out riding around Moselle with his son hours before their deaths.

On his return home, Murdaugh called the police in hysterics and reported finding his wife and son dead from multiple gunshot wounds near dog kennels on the property. He claimed he was trying to shoot his son in the head, according to court records.

Prosecutors at the crime scene reported that rifle cartridges found near Paul's body have marks that match a gun similar to one missing from Murdaugh's home. Although that gun has yet to be located, prosecutors believe another similar model may also be present at his residence.

Murdaugh has also been accused of stealing millions of dollars from his clients and orchestrating a hit to collect a $10 million life insurance policy for himself. Additionally, he faces numerous other charges such as financial crimes for which he could serve up to 100 years in prison.

Murdaugh’s Defense

Murdaugh admitted, "I lied to them because of my addiction's paranoia." He went on to state that he told multiple law enforcement officials he was at Moselle's dog kennels the night of the killings, yet actually didn't arrive until afterward.

At trial, Murdaugh revealed to the jury his new story about what occurred that night. He claimed he had been lying to law enforcement for 20 months about being at Moselle that evening due to his addiction to opioid painkillers.

Murdaugh’s Cross-Examination

On Friday, Alex Murdaugh took the stand before prosecutor Creighton Waters and was put to the test. She was being probed over his lies and drug use, among other matters.

Waters first asked Murdaugh about his alibi on the night of the murders. He explained that he went to visit his ailing mother and then drove back home, leaving Moselle around 9 p.m., around when prosecutors believe Paul and Maggie were killed.

Waters then noted that data pulled from Murdaugh's phone showed him taking more steps in five minutes than he did throughout the rest of the day. Additionally, it revealed he made numerous calls during that time.

Waters asserted that Murdaugh didn't delete any of the calls he made during that period, but rather forgot them. Ultimately, Waters accused Murdaugh of fabricating an alibi to avoid jail time.

Waters then probed Murdaugh about his pain pill addiction. He admitted taking them, which he said were making him paranoid. He often kept the pills hidden in his car.

He would later come to realize that he had taken them. Additionally, he acknowledged stealing money from his clients.

Waters maintained that Murdaugh stole from his clients to divert attention away from any financial crimes that were pending at the time of the murders. He asked Murdaugh to recall specific conversations with clients and friends whom he had wronged.

Waters then inquired about Murdaugh's solicitor's badge, which he had worn for years. As he spoke to people, Waters displayed a photo of Murdaugh wearing that badge.

He then interrogated Murdaugh about the boat crash that killed Paul in February 2019 and inquired whether or not he attempted to influence those affected by that disaster.

Waters then probed Murdaugh about other instances in which he had lied. He probed him about misleading Gloria Satterfield's sons Tony and Mark Satterfield regarding the case, as well as about a roadside shooting that occurred in June 2018.

As the season progresses, Veronica starts to develop feelings for Alec Bilson (Ron Silver), her stepfather. But Alec is adamant about not mixing work and pleasure and does not wish to become involved with Veronica.

He eventually promises her a tropical vacation, but she hesitates. Uncertain of how to express her emotions, she struggles with this decision.
