Sources Raiders plan to use franchise tag on Josh Jacobs

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Raiders plan to use the franchise tag on Josh Jacobs if they cannot reach an agreement with him by Tuesday's deadline.

Last season, Jacobs led the league in rushing yards with 1,653 on 340 carries while also scoring 12 touchdowns. As such, he is considered a high-end RB1 for fantasy purposes.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Raiders plan on using the franchise tag on running back Josh Jacobs if they cannot reach an agreement with him by Tuesday's deadline. If no deal can be struck by then, then the franchise tag will be applied.

The franchise tag allows all teams to acquire a free agent and make them their starting running back until July 15, when they can begin negotiations for a long-term contract. The cost of the tag is $10 million, which is lower than what he could receive with a multi-year deal before the season began.

Jacobs has a longstanding tradition of running for the Raiders, leading the league in rushing last season with 1,653 yards. Additionally, he finished among the top 10 for catches and total scrimmage yards.

He had a career year despite the Raiders' decision in May to decline his fifth-year option, and went on to earn his first Pro Bowl nod. With over 4,700 yards rushing in four seasons and 12 touchdowns, he became the most prolific Raiders running back since 1994.

Jacobs is set to become a free agent, but he still wants to play for the Raiders. He stated that he wants to remain part of the Silver and Black for the duration of his career and doesn't plan on taking advantage of any franchise tags that won't provide him with long-term stability.

With any luck, the Raiders and Jacobs can reach an agreement before Tuesday's deadline. It remains uncertain whether they'll use either an exclusive franchise tag on him or not; if so, Jacobs would receive a salary of approximately $10 million in 2023.

On March 15th, the NFL's free agency period begins and several talented running backs could potentially be tagged by their teams. Lamar Jackson and Daniel Jones in particular could be intriguing to watch what teams are willing to do with these top players on their rosters.

NFL Network

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Raiders may use the franchise tag on running back Josh Jacobs if they cannot reach an agreement by Tuesday's deadline. This appears likely as Jacobs has indicated his desire to remain with the Raiders next season.

The NFL Network is a national cable television channel that broadcasts live games and other sporting events, such as the NFL Draft. Its primary programming focus lies on Thursday night football; additionally, it covers coverage of both the NFL Preseason and Pro Bowl.

In addition to live telecasts, NFL Network also broadcasts NFL Films programs with sideline interviews and analysis as well as game-related special features. Available on most cable providers and satellite receivers alike, NFL Films provides access to game footage.

Since 2006, ESPN has broadcast eight regular-season NFL games during Thursday prime time as Thursday Night Football. Their coverage is similar to ESPN and Fox Sports' and they compete with ABC for rights to broadcast the NFL Draft.

Many of the network's telecasts have also been simulcast on local television stations in the home team's market. For instance, CBS and NBC agreed to show a simulcast of the Indianapolis Colts-New England Patriots game on MyNetworkTV owned-and-operated station WWOR-TV (channel 9), however the station expressed dissatisfaction with this arrangement.

On average, the NFL Network is the sixth most watched TV network in America. Additionally, it is one of cable television's major players - reaching more than 10% of all cable television households across America.

Additionally, the NFL Network maintains an extensive library of archival content on its website. Furthermore, they produce original series and features.

As of 2018, the NFL Network was broadcasting eight Thursday night football games per week and several special-edition preseason matches, such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Additionally, it serves as home to NFL GameDay - an NFL pre-game show airing Sundays and Mondays before each game.

In the United States, viewers can access the network on most major cable and satellite providers as well as DirecTV. It is also accessible online via streaming services like NFL Mobile app.

CBS Sports

If the Raiders and running back Josh Jacobs cannot reach an agreement by Tuesday, they plan to use the franchise tag against him. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, this means Jacobs has a unique opportunity to test out free agency and potentially find a new team before next season's start.

After tagging Jacobs this year, the Raiders would have approximately $10 million in salary-cap room to use for building a new roster during this offseason. The franchise tag costs just over $5 million annually - not an astronomical price to pay for one of the top five running backs in the NFL.

Jacobs led the league in rushing yards last season, gaining 1,653 on 340 carries and setting career highs with 12 touchdowns. According to Football Outsiders, he also ranked second for rushing DYAR and eighth for rushing DVOA.

Jacobs has emerged as a top free agent this offseason, and the Raiders may attempt to secure him on an extended contract after 2023. That could prove challenging since Jacobs will enter the market after being selected in the first round of NFL draft picks in 2023.

In the past, only five other players in the NFL have been tagged: cornerbacks Charles Woodson (2004 and 2005) and Nnamdi Asomugha (2008); defensive lineman Richard Seymour (2010) and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley (2011).

Therefore, the franchise tag is a way for teams to secure the services of an excellent player in order to guarantee his presence the following season. Therefore, if the Raiders do decide to tag Jacobs, it would be an extremely risky move that could cost them dearly in the long run.

In the end, though, it would be best for the Raiders to keep their star running back on board. He is an inspirational leader on and off the field and enjoys a close relationship with coach Josh McDaniels. While it could be too late to prevent him from leaving town, he deserves a long-term deal nonetheless.

ESPN

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports the Raiders may use the franchise tag on Josh Jacobs if they cannot reach an agreement with him by Tuesday's deadline. Doing so would cost Jacobs around $10 million, but he prefers a contract extension instead.

Before the 2022 season, the Raiders declined Jacobs' fifth-year option, costing him an estimated $2 million next year. This comes despite Jacobs' remarkable season that earned him All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition as well as rushing for a league high 1,653 yards.

Jacobs, a product of Alabama, made an impact during his rookie year by averaging 4.9 yards per carry and scoring 12 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 53 passes and led the NFL with 93 rushing first downs.

He is considered one of the top running prospects in this year's draft and expected to earn a substantial amount during free agency. While the Raiders don't have much money to spend on free agents this offseason, they are unlikely to let their star running back leave.

ESPN+ is the multi-sport direct-to-consumer video service launched by Disney's Direct-to-Consumer and International (DTCI) segment and ESPN in April 2018 that boasts 222.8 million subscribers and offers thousands of live events, on-demand content, as well as original programming that cannot be found on cable TV or digital networks.

Additionally, Netflix offers a selection of popular documentaries and feature films like "30 for 30", which chronicles some of sports' biggest moments such as Ali vs Holmes, Tupac Shakur's fight at MGM Grand and more.

The network believes sports can be a powerful force for good, using its diverse media assets to uplift human spirits through strategic community investments, cause marketing programs, collaboration with sports organizations and employee volunteerism. Its corporate citizenship initiatives include the SportsUp initiative which supports non-profit organizations using sport to make an impact on their surrounding world.

ESPN is a leader in sports broadcasting, with its flagship channel and seven related channels reaching more than 200 countries. Additionally, it provides regional channels throughout Africa, Australia, Canada and Latin America.
