Portugal 40 Liechtenstein Cristiano Ronaldo scores twice as he celebrates

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals - a penalty kick and trademark free kick - to mark his record 197th international appearance and secure Portugal's 4-0 opening win over Liechtenstein. This brings his total to 120 goals for club and country.

New manager Roberto Martinez gave Ronaldo the start against a small Alpine principality and the Portuguese star did not disappoint. His treble in 12 minutes set an impressive tone for the match.

Goal 1: Joao Cancelo

Portugal began their Euro 2024 qualification campaign with a convincing 4-0 win against Liechtenstein, led by Cristiano Ronaldo's two goals as they celebrated his 197th international cap. New boss Roberto Martinez gave the nod to the Portuguese star and he delivered another classy display as they put an end to a World Cup campaign which saw him suffer a career-threatening knee injury during the final.

He scored the opening goal of the game within 10 minutes, wrong-footing Benjamin Buchel with a deflected effort from a long ball forward. Bernardo Silva made it two shortly after halftime with an impressive shot from outside the box and soon Ronaldo added another goal from a penalty kick.

On the 63rd minute, Ronaldo struck home his 120th goal - giving Martinez a dream start and sending Portugal on their way to another successful qualifying campaign. With this strike, Portugal have shown they are in top form heading into the remaining rounds of qualifying.

On a beautiful evening in Lisbon, The Man Who Couldn't Retire was on a mission to prove to his fans why he still considers himself an icon. On this 197th international appearance, Ronaldo went down as the most capped male player in all of football's history.

As he did so, it was cause for celebration amongst Portugal's fans. This was their first match under Roberto Martinez and they wanted a win that would give them some confidence and momentum heading into Germany.

Portugal were well-defended in the middle of the park by a strong defensive unit, with Guerreiro completing six out of eight passes and playing two key passes during the opening half. He also cleared a free-kick in the 63rd minute with great movement.

It was a classic contest of wills, with Liechtenstein seeking to play on the counterattack. However, Portugal largely contained them to their own half, leaving Liechtenstein left-backs constantly perplexed. Ultimately though, it was the Portuguese who had more chances.

Goal 2: Bernardo Silva

Cristiano Ronaldo, the world's most expensive player, set a record on Thursday by becoming the first male player to score twice in an international match. He scored with a penalty kick in the 51st minute and free-kick 12 minutes later during Portugal's 4-0 demolition of Liechtenstein.

Portugal claimed a well-earned victory over Liechtenstein to kickstart their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. Joao Cancelo opened the scoring in the eighth minute, followed by Bernardo Silva's close range goal in the 47th. And just four minutes into the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo sealed victory by nailing home a penalty after Cancelo had set up both goals.

Bernardo Silva was a regular starter for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup, making five appearances. This season he has also been an outstanding performer for City, including their 2-0 victory against Newcastle United in March which included his goal which proved crucial for their win.

As the game progressed, Portugal looked increasingly dangerous on the break with Bernardo Silva getting forward often. He attempted a shot from long range in the first half which deflected away from goal.

Just after the hour mark, he got forward again and had another good opportunity. The ball came across the area to him on the right side, but Buchel saved his shot with ease.

Portugal players are creating havoc for Liechtenstein with their high line. They make regular crosses into the box, making it difficult to score from them.

Finally, it comes to the left wing where Bruno Fernandes crosses in a cross for Cancelo to attack once more. But his shot is deflected out of play as the Portuguese look on in pursuit.

Soon thereafter, Ronaldo gets his first opportunity. A cross from the left wing finds him at full stretch but unfortunately it just misses the target.

Goal 3: Ronaldo

On Thursday, Portugal won 4-0 against Liechtenstein with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice to become the first man to reach 100 goals for his country in competitive internationals. After missing the World Cup, Ronaldo returned to the starting line-up and converted a penalty in the 51st minute before scoring off a free kick 12 minutes later for an impressive total of 120 goals for Portugal.

It was a moment of true celebration, as the players rose to their feet to greet each other with handshakes and hugs. The stadium was packed, creating an electric atmosphere.

As the players walked around, it served as a reminder that this team is built on strong foundations and everyone wants to be part of something greater than themselves - not just for making history but for its own sake. Even with Ronaldo still in his prime, everyone feels the strength of this unit.

Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva got off to an impressive start to the match, with Joao Cancelo opening the scoring in the eighth minute and Bernardo Silva adding a close-range goal seven minutes later - Portugal's first goal since beating Norway in a friendly back in February. It proved to be an important breakthrough for their side.

In the second half, the home side continued their dominant play with few chances for the visitors. Unfortunately, Portugal were left frustrated by a lack of quality defending.

In the 63rd minute, Ronaldo found space to strike a powerful free kick from outside of the area. As he celebrated, Ronaldo turned his face back towards those in attendance as he took in their cheers.

This was an inspiring moment and made the fans even prouder to be supporters of this team. The energy in the air was palpable, as players finally received recognition they deserved.

Goal 4: Ronaldo

Portugal made an immediate impact in Euro 2024 qualifying, easily defeating Liechtenstein 4-0. Joao Cancelo opened the scoring for Portugal in the eighth minute before Bernardo Silva added a second goal just 68 seconds later. With such an easy victory for Roberto Martinez' men, Portugal are now on track to victory in Group J.

They are now four points clear at the top of the table with one game remaining and will aim for two wins on Sunday when they travel to Luxembourg. Their previous seven matches against Liechtenstein have all been victories, including a pair of 8-0 triumphs.

Portugal began the game with great possession as they applied the pressure, with Bruno Fernandes playing in across the box to find Joao Cancelo with a half volley from outside the area that took an unfortunate deflection but managed to sneak under Benjamin Buchel for a goal.

Ronaldo missed several chances to extend their lead, but finally managed to score after 67 minutes when he sent a free kick over the keeper for an emphatic goal. It was his 120th goal for Portugal and now stands at 712 goals across clubs and nations alike.

On Saturday, he scored his second double for Portugal; he previously scored three times against Northern Ireland in September 2013. Additionally, he added another goal in a 4-2 win against Cameroon back in March 2014.

He has been an indispensable factor in Real Madrid's success, earning the first FIFA Puskas award in 2009 and becoming the most prolific goal scorer in Champions League history. Additionally, he holds the record for most goals scored in a single season (17) both at club and international level, making him one of football's greatest figures.

He is a beloved figure in Portuguese society, beloved by all his fans. Since their 2014 World Cup win and Euro 2016 title win, he has been an integral part of the Portugal team. Recognized as one of Europe's best players, he will likely remain in contention for next year's tournament in Germany.
