Netflix is once again experimenting with live content, this time with Chris Rock's upcoming stand-up special. Coming off of its successful Netflix Is a Joke festival, Rock's comedy special will be streamed as an international live event by Netflix, according to a company release.
In addition to the main event, Netflix is providing a half-hour pre-show from Los Angeles' Comedy Store and an after-show featuring Rock's friends and celebrity guests. Selective Outrage will air March 4.
Netflix hasn't done a lot of live streaming before, but the company is getting creative for its next big event. Specifically, the streamer is providing some extra entertainment before and after Chris Rock's live comedy special.
The pre-show will have a high-speed video feed that allows viewers to watch Chris Rock on the big screen as if they were present. Furthermore, the post-show will offer an exclusive behind the scenes look at some of Rock's more memorable moments.
For the more discriminating viewer, there's also a sophisticated live stream that offers pausing, rewinding and even an exclusive gifs version of the show. Plus, there's even a red "Watch Now" button which opens a virtual door into a waiting room so you can relax and watch on your terms - all from home! Plus, with subscription to Netflix you'll gain access to many specials!
Netflix is prepping to offer some additional entertainment before and after Chris Rock's upcoming live comedy special. The company has announced an impressive line-up for both pre- and post-shows on March 4, which will mark the first live streaming standup show ever hosted on their platform.
On March 4, The Comedy Store in Los Angeles will stream "The Show Before the Show," starting at 6:30pm PT/9:30 ET. Featured guests include Amy Schumer, Cedric the Entertainer, Ice-T, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Matthew McConaughey, Sir Paul McCartney, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and more for an entertaining pre-show experience.
Joel Gallen will produce and direct a half-hour special that features various comedians counting down until Chris Rock's live Netflix comedy event begins at 7pm PT/10pm ET. It also includes live commentary from other comedians as well as special messages from Rock's friends.
On March 4, "The Show After the Show" will air at 10pm PT/12:01 ET and feature guests such as JB Smoove and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Hosted by brothers David Spade and Dana Carvey, it features guests including JB Smoove and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in attendance.
Netflix is expanding their live stand-up comedy offerings. Last spring, they held their inaugural festival in Los Angeles called "Netflix Is a Joke: The Festival," as well as airing specials from Adam Sandler, John Mulaney, and Dave Chappelle.
Chris Rock is bringing his "Chris Rock Ego Death World Tour" to Baltimore, Maryland on March 4. Although he has yet to address the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap joke, it seems like it would be appropriate for his new Netflix special.
Fans can expect a lot of material from Rock's recent world tour. He also plans to crack some Oscars jokes, so it promises to be an entertaining night for the comedian and his friends.
If you were curious how Netflix would handle the event, expect it to include features that allow members to rewind and pause while watching the live show. They also have access to jump from one episode to another.
Netflix recently began testing live content, and their next big project is a Chris Rock special that's set for broadcast. Last month they announced plans for an international comedy event with the stand-up comedian that could mark an exciting step for the streaming giant.
Since launching their on-demand streaming platform in 2013, Netflix has expanded its content selection to include video series and original movies, such as Oscar winner Roma. Notable titles available to stream include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Stranger Things, Narcos, and The Crown - all available to watch now.
Chris Rock's special, Selective Outrage, marks the streamer's foray into live streaming with its first event from Baltimore set for March 4.
Netflix has added to the excitement of their event by announcing two star-studded pre and post shows that will air before and after the main event. These programs will feature an array of celebrities and promise plenty of entertainment!
Ronny Chieng will host the show before the show from The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. This half-hour preshow features messages from Rock's friends and colleagues, such as Cedric the Entertainer, Ice-T, Jerry Seinfeld, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.
After the post-show is hosted by David Spade and Dana Carvey, featuring guests like Arsenio Hall, six-time NBA champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, JB Smooth and more special guests. The broadcast will take place live at 9:30PM ET/6:30 PT on March 4th.
Netflix may not always be the most dependable place for live streaming, but it remains a reliable option for those events you must not miss. The service offers various ways of watching live events with members having the option to rewind, pause and jump back in if they start late or exit out of the stream early.
Netflix is taking a risk by livestreaming a comedy special for the first time, so if it proves successful, they may want to add more live events into their lineup in the future.
Netflix's live Chris Rock special will feature celebrity-studded pre- and post-shows, the first of their kind. Hosted by Ronny Chieng from The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, these half-hour shows will include messages from Cedric the Entertainer, Ice-T, Sir Paul McCartney and others.
On March 4, The Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore will present a full evening of live entertainment. The comedy special, entitled Selective Outrage, will be streamed as the company's inaugural live streaming event.
Rock will also be discussing his experiences at last year's Oscars as part of the special. He previously addressed this incident on his "Chris Rock Ego Death World Tour," and has stated that he plans to discuss it further on a future Netflix special.
At the 2022 Academy Awards, Smith earned himself the Best Actor award and approached Rock to present at the ceremony. When Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith's shaved head due to alopecia (hair loss condition), Smith immediately approached Rock and slapped him across the face. Later that night he apologized both to Rock and the Academy for what had occurred; Smith was banned from their organization for 10 years.
At a recent stand-up special in Holmdel, New Jersey, Rock was asked about the incident and made it clear that he wasn't the victim. He said he was only reacting in the moment but said the slap hurt him deeply and it wasn't funny at all.
In an emotional video posted online, Smith apologized to Rock for the slap and expressed that he "felt deeply sorry" for what had transpired. The actor then encouraged Rock to be honest with him and reach out when it felt right.
It's unfortunate that the slap has remained so contentious. It serves as a painful reminder of the persistent sexism which continues to affect Black communities, particularly at high-profile events.
Rock has made it known that he will address this topic on his Netflix special, set to stream in early 2023. While not the first person to take aim at Smith, he certainly stands out as one of the most outspoken.
