NC State Wolfpack men's basketball team competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of NAIA Division I. As founding members of the ACC, the Wolfpack have won two NCAA National Championships.
NC State has experienced a lot of change this offseason, but is finally settled with an almost full roster. Seven newcomers join an already-crowded group of underclassmen and transfers that includes star sophomore Terquavion Smith.
NC State Wolfpack men's basketball program boasts an illustrious past. As one of the founding members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, it has won 10 conference championships and two national titles.
The team has been led by some of the greatest coaches in NCAA history, such as Everett Case and Norm Sloan. Additionally, several players who went on to have successful professional basketball careers and other sports were part of this legacy.
Case's teams had many successful seasons during the 1960s, helping the program develop into an ACC powerhouse. He was inducted into the ACC Hall of Fame in 2002 and received NCAA's highest honor, the National Coaching Award.
In 1963, the Wolfpack reached the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Two years later in 1964, they were ranked seventh in the conference - marking Case's final season as head coach of the Wolfpack and its last postseason appearance.
NC State basketball program is proud to honor Les Robinson, who coached the Wolfpack for five seasons and earned two-time ACC coach of the year honors. He is widely considered one of college basketball's greatest coaches.
He joined NC State as a head coach in 1966, bringing with him an extensive array of experience. As head coach of four different programs - including the NC State basketball team - he holds one of the most successful records in ACC history.
He boasts a remarkable 468-339 career record at State and is widely considered one of the top coaches in all of NCAA Division I. He earned praise for winning the inaugural ACC tournament and making the Wolfpack an elite championship contender for decades.
His 73-11 record and 1974 NCAA title prove he is one of the greatest to ever come out of North Carolina. Additionally, he played for the U.S Olympic basketball team in 1972, earning him a place in history by being inducted into NC State Athletics Hall of Fame.
Kevin Keatts was hired as the 20th coach of NC State in 2017, and brings with him a stellar reputation within sports. He's renowned for his dedication to recruiting and developing young athletes as well. On Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum, Keatts introduced himself to the media; a graduate of UNC with over 10 years of experience working within athletics at UNC.
The ACC has long been one of the top conferences in the NCAA. Its member schools represent a range of colleges and universities, including some that do not belong to FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision).
NC State has a proud tradition of men's basketball team winning conference championships. Since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 1954, they have claimed 10 conference titles and two national championships.
Before joining the ACC, NC State competed in the Southern Conference. During their time there, the Wolfpack earned seven conference titles.
In 1953, the Wolfpack played their first ACC contest on the road against Wake Forest. Although ranked eighth at the time, Case's squad defeated the Demon Deacons 82-80 in overtime to qualify for another trip to the NCAA Tournament where they would go on to defeat George Washington and La Salle.
Following that season, Case's team went on to win another ACC title the following year, defeating Duke 87-77 in the conference finale.
However, due to NCAA sanctions the Wolfpack were denied scholarship eligibility and this put a major strain on the team; their first losing season in Raleigh came during 1959-60 season.
Case's teams never finished lower than fourth at NC State during his eight years there; his teams finished fourth in 1961 and third in 1962, both of which advanced to the ACC tournament.
After retiring in 1965, Case was succeeded by Les Robinson who stayed at the school for five years and helped lead the Wolfpack to two ACC tournaments and three regular season championships. During his tenure, they won seven games against other conferences across North Carolina State University's campus.
At that time, the ACC expanded its conference tournament from four to six teams and added a play-in game between the eighth and ninth place teams - known as "Les Robinson Invitational". This matchup was held every Thursday night for five years on Thursday nights.
As a result of their expansion, the ACC has seen its television revenues soar over time. Now, on average, they generate around $100 million annually from ESPN and ABC broadcasting fees - far surpassing anything schools in SEC or Big Ten receive from those networks.
North Carolina University has been one of the nation's top college basketball programs for decades, consistently making it to the NCAA Tournament more times than any other team and boasting one of the nation's highest winning percentages.
However, the Tar Heels have had their share of struggles in big games over the years - including an overtime loss to Duke during the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
UNC is one of the nation's most beloved schools, and their fans come from all over to cheer on UNC's men's basketball teams when they take on rivals such as NC State. Fans come from far and wide to cheer their favorite team on!
For the Wolfpack, North Carolina has been an impressive test so far this season - especially for graduate guard Jarkel Joiner who has excelled at point this year after transferring from Ole Miss.
He's a 6-1 athletic guard who can play on ball screens and shoot with confidence and swagger. Additionally, his passing touch is impressive, as well as his willingness to back down defenders in the paint or at the foul line.
Burns, a former Big South Player of the Year for Winthrop University, has had an impressive season for NC State so far, averaging 19.5 points per game. His ability to create space in both the half court and on DHOs could prove crucial if the Wolfpack are going to stay competitive against top-notch competition.
NC State has made great strides in building their roster with players with potential. Along with Smith, Joiner and Clark, they also have Burns who has shown great promise since returning from his hip injury last season.
The team's other key player is junior forward Armando Bacot, who is averaging 18. points and 13 rebounds this season. He's an impressive inside presence who has started to build upon his double-double streak after it was ended against Boston College.
Fans of the Wolfpack are most worried about Terquavion Smith, who left the game in the second half due to a hard fall. He reported neck and elbow pain as well as numbness in his arm after taking the hit. Hopefully Smith can return for the remainder of this season and help the Wolfpack stay in contention for an ACC championship.
